This week’s spoken-word session at Kwa Haraba Art Gallery, in Blantyre, took a sweet-surprising turn when Bahamian top poet Obediah Michael Smith joined and performed five of his pieces.
Obediah Michael Smith has 20 poetry books to his name and has attended such revered world poetry festivals as the Havana International Poetry.
Leader of the Bahamas Writers’ Guild, 60 year-old Smith has had his poetry translated into Spanish and included in anthologies and journals in South America and Mexico
And on Wednesday, he joined Kwa Haraba weekly poetry session, where he sent the relatively youthful audience to the edge of their seats, as if lecturing them; ‘young people, we still kill it the old way’.
“I came to Africa in 2014 when I was invited for a poetry festival in Kenya. And I decided to seize the moment to explore more of this continent, so here I am in Malawi and with you, this evening,” he said.
This week’s event was also spiced by live musical performance from Sam Shaba, who is set to launch his album on November 26.
Kwa Haraba Art Gallery is slowly but surely becoming a hub of poetry, with Spoken word sessions being held each and every Wednesday starting 6pm.
