Last evening, someone dropped a new song of Skeffa Chimoto in one of the WhatsApp chartrooms I belong.
It is comment on Malawi’s current state of affairs and my initial reaction was that Skeffa has perfectly fitted into the void: the voice of reason.
In the song, Skeffa is reminding us that above power and wealth, we should be valuing the peace that we are globally known for.
‘Ndi ife a mphawi, ndalama ndiyovuta, chuma chathu ndi mtendere/ Anthu onsewa akuthawa kwawo sikuti kunalibe ndalama/ Ali ndi siliva, golide, diamond- koma mtendere kulibe’
Judging from where we are coming. Our peacefulness. We have done the worst but it’s not too late to shake ourselves from the consciousness slumber. He warns:
‘Zimayamba ndipang’ono pang’ono kuponyelana ma phuzo/ Mkwiyo uja wakula, phuzo lija lachepa nkuyamba kuponyerana miyala’ and this is exactly where we are.
But if we don’t listen to this lone preacher, this is where we are heading:
‘Miyala ija yachepa mkwiyo uja ukukulabe nkuyamba kunola dzikwanje/ Dzikwanje dzachepa ena alowelera nkuyamba kugawa mfuti’
I don’t know the title of this song, but am calling it ‘Dala’. This is from the chorus:
‘Tisaononge dziko kamba kodzikonda/ Kenaka nkumadzati Mbuye mwaloranji/ Ilo ndi dala/ Malawi ndi dala/ Kuzunzitsa amai ndi ana. Nkhalamba kusowa kolowera/ Ichi ndi chipongwe/Malawi pewa chibwana’
And to those of you who wrongly think one can’t be MCP in Thyolo, DPP in Dowa and UDF in Rumphi, Pastor Chimoto has this sermon for you:
‘Palibe tchimo kusapota chipani umachikonda/ Sikupalamula kusankha mtsogoleri wakumtima kwako/Koma zonsezi tipange mwachikondi ndimosungilana ulemu’
On where Skeffa talked about graduation from mere verbal war to pelting stones to zikwanje up to guns, he said ‘ENA ALOWELERA NKUYAMBA KUGAWA MFUTI’
As a Malawian, Skeffa understands what Malawians are not capable of financing themselves. And he seems to be aware that the well coordinated-ness of some of the post elections happenings is being achieved with funding from elsewhere across the boarders and he warns:
‘Polandira ma thandizo akunja mudzionesetsa/ Poti si onse amapeleka ndi mtima wachikondi/ Mabungwe ena ntchito zawo sidzitheka mu dziko lopanda nkhondo/ Chuma chawo ndi nyambo akuyambanitseni mudzidulana makosi/ Iwo mtima mbeee kumatola zithunzi nkumatumiza kwawo/Anthu achifundo kumasonkha ndalama iwo nkumalemera’
And to the youth? ‘Mukamajijirika ku ntchito zabwino dziko limapindura/ Koma musalolere kugwilitsidwa ntchito ndi anthu odzikonda/ Asakusandutseni dzigawenga chifukwa cha ndalama’
But something is missing in ‘Dala’. You see, after appealing to the consciousness of politicians, NGOs, youth and Malawians in general, Skeffa is deadly silent on the role of religious leaders at this crucial hour. Why?
Is the silence an echo to our preachers’ own silence? Is the pulpit empty and Skeffa is protesting? Or is the moral decadence that has brought us to this end a vivid sign of Malawi Church’s failure? And this lone prophet who once told us that ‘Ndiife Amodzi Tikondane’ carrying a placard written: A CHRIST-LESS CHURCH MUST FALL?
Skeffa has delivered a sermon, but unfortunately, to ears long waxed by partisanship.
