Rhetoric Analysis of Chitewel Ejiofor And William Kamkwamba’s Movie ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’

BY ROGER SIULA

Son of the soil, William Kamkwamba has harnessed the planet with his self-tailored story knitted out of a humble innovation he dared, deep in the remote corner of Kasungu District. The depth and breadth of the story touch on elements that formulate the undertone beyond the pictures, language and action. The story harnesses themes that mirror and resonate out of the screen to real life.

PASSION, POTENTIAL, PERSISTENCE

William, young, orphaned thus underprivileged, had invested his passion in science as a core subject in school. The odds were against him throughout. From inability to raise school fees, to compromised access to a decent school library and of course, lack of basic needs chances of William making it in life were slim, actually next to nil. However, William believed in his potential, his eyes were on the ball and he persistently pursued that which he believed in–that he would make magic with a simple bicycle dynamo which would generate power to rescue the village from pangs of hunger. Ultimately, that dynamo also powered his biggest breakthrough to become a global asset, the William Kamkwamba he has become to this day. His character echoes the passion, potential and persistence boiling in his youthful years to steam the reality of his dreams in high definition using simple available instruments.

Quite a number of times, in different scenarios, we tend to give up our passion thereby burying our potential because of lack of persistence. Hundreds of thousands of young people have been diverted into industries that they have zero passion for. This could be attributed to parents or guardians who dictate what they want their wards to be, the system which, at times, disregards and twists students’ choices of career which has a repercussion of them failing to apply diligence in their pursuit.

The story of Kamkwamba insistently resonates defiance against poverty and limitations. It is an inspiring story that one man can change the fortunes of a community. A tale of how one can find gold in the rubble of communal privation.

RELUCTANCE TO ADOPT INNOVATION

When William dared his father to give him the bicycle to bring his innovation to life, the dad resisted and rebuked the young man several times. As they struggled to till the dry land, William persistently urged his father that he has got the solution to save the people.

Despite reluctance from the dad, William’s peers were quick to embrace his efforts and believed in his potential. There is a scene in the movie where he gangs up with his friends to confront his father and demand the bike—the most wanted—to enable William finish the mission of harnessing the wind. This portrays the traditional conflict of generations where the rigidity of old guards is confronted by the zeal and flexibility of youth to embrace progressive innovations. The father did not want to take a risk of losing his invaluable bicycle to enable young William create a bigger thing, an innovation that would catapult him into a boy whose story will later defy the borders and command global attention –a game changer from humble beginnings.

Malawi is stuck, not because of lack of resources, but because of its inability to support and encourage innovation.

In 2016, Felix Kambwiri of Dowa built a helicopter out of scrap material, the civil aviation officials have grounded him to this day. And a standard 7 drop out, Mulanje-based Gabriel Kondesi, was arrested after setting up a pirate radio in his village, and had his talent nipped just like that. These are some of the quick dominant examples of strides made by inborn talents in addition to various applications and breakthroughs that students from various universities in Malawi do. This leads to making the essence of brewing domestic innovations futile.

POLITICAL INTOLERANCE, POLICE ABUSE

Hunger tears apart lives of the people in William’s village. It is a crisis that tortures lives and relaying this reality to the political powers landed the chief in trouble. The political authorities unleash police brutality on the ‘honest’chief, kicking him left, right and centre, torturing the old man and subjecting him to an early death. As a representative of the people, his only crime was to speak out the truth about the hunger that tormented his subjects.

The movie depicts that when it comes to telling politicians the truth, they hate it. It underlines how soft politicians are for people that worship and praise them, their pride in being told lies, their intolerance to criticism and how the police go scot free in disregarding human rights by torturing people. This is still the practicetoday, people have lost their lives and jobs simply for holding opposing views to the political masters.

In 2011, Chief Mponda of Nsamala Village in Balaka was beaten up and stripped naked by ruling party members.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT, GIRL  CHILD EDUCATION

William’s sister fails to go to the University because the family could not raise enough money to carter for her education. Poverty steals her prospects to a better life. Circumstances forced her into early marriage, burying all potential and passion she had to pursue further studies. This is a common situation most girls in Malawi experience which ends up a major hindrance to their dreams.

As commonly said, educating a woman equals educating a nation –there is a confirmation to this in the movie through the character of the librarian. She was incredibly helpful to William’s passion for sciences and research. She fought against the Head teacher’s move meant to bar William’s access to the library, she believed in the young man’s potential and passion.

The flip side of women empowerment are also depicted when bandits take advantage of the absence of William’s father to harass the mother and sister, forcefully confiscating their only bucket of maize flour amidst despite ravaging famine. The man took advantage of women’s vulnerability.

POOR EDUCATION FACILITIES

The school that William went to was shambolic, its library was dilapidated with a handful books, and the infrastructure was yet another mess signalising Malawi’s under investment in the education sector. And the situation in rural areas is worse. The movie attempts to remind authorities that with the right amount of investment in the education sector, Malawi could breed more and more innovators. It is sad that children still learn under trees and absurd infrastructure in some rural areas of Malawi. Worse still, there have been sad incidences of deaths due to poor tragic deaths of infrastructure.

In 2018, four learners at Natchengwa Primary school in Zomba died and more than 30 others were injured when a wall of the school block collapsed on them.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION, FOOD INSECURITY

Midway in the movie, poverty dilutes a sense of communal ownership in as far as the preservation of trees is concerned. Trees were cut wantonly, with no regard to the impact of calamities such acts would trigger. No wonder a dry spell hit the area, leaving the community destitute and hungry. This even affected the cultural artefacts of gulewankulu –their habitat, survival and energy was all drained.

Perhaps this aspect highlights the multi-faceted impact of environmental degradation, leading to climate change that threatens life of all living things.

The famine, forcing families to live on a meal or none per day, not only threatens healthy lives but in essence stimulates fresh calls for Malawi to achieve food security and improved nutrition through the promotion sustainable agriculture.

CONCLUSION

Whilst William Kamkwamba harnessed the wind, his story exposes a tremendous amount of gullies threatening the domestic topography of livelihoods like lack of access to basic necessities –food, water, proper housing, hospitals, roads, clothing etc.

Most of the thematic areas highlighted in this analysis are directly related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The bits and pieces of the storyline of the movie are a reminder to Malawi and the rest of the world to go an extra mile in meeting the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world.

The unity and collective communal approach portrayed towards the end of the movie underlines the essence of being purpose driven. That alone stirred more inspiration and motivation in William to harness the wind, save the community from hunger and fire up communal excitement.

All in all, William harnessed the wind, flew beyond borders and is now a global figure. Malawi needs to harness so much more disciplines in order to fly high and escape the brackets of being an impoverished country basking in the ranks and files of the world’s least developed countries. The boy read from his school’s deprived library and managed to translate theory into action –this element challenges all of us to be action oriented; act on our knowledge, act on our policies, act on breathing life into our potential and make use of available resources to defeat various social and economic barriers.

…Organise fundraising show in Blantyre

Blantyre March 20, 2019 —In response to devastated floods that have left many Malawians homeless, journalists under the umbrella body of Blantyre Press Club ( BPC) in collaboration with the Malawi’s reggae outfit Black Missionaries has organised a fundraising show on Friday with a target of realizing K3 Million to assist  the victims.

Speaking in an interview Both BPC President Blessings Kanache and Black Missionaries Manger Ras Ray Halawa said all is set for the charity show at Mibawa Hall in Blantyre

Kanache said the initiative to assist flood victims underscores BPC commitment to respond to the and ease the suffering of the affected communities.

“Realizing that there are thousands of people in need of support following heavy rains and floods in some parts of the country, BPC decided to lead by example. We are journalists yes but we are Malawians and those suffering are our brothers and sisters and this is the more reason we decided to partner with some media houses in the country and the Black Missionaries to organize a fundraising show at Mibawa Multi-purpose Hall in Limbe this Friday 22 March from 8 pm,” said Kanache

Kanache said BPC is saddened that the majority of those suffering are children who have lost everything including food and school materials.

“The club is working with various partners including the Malawi Red Cross to ensure that every penny collected reach to beneficiaries. BPC is aware that people have clothes, shoes, kitchen utensils, pails and beckets they don’t use. We are encouraging people to bring such things so that we can carry them to the people who will use them to the fullest this time when they have no any other option apart from waiting for aid from well wishers.

He added ‘We plan to donate to Chikwawa because it is one of the worst affected. We understand there are more people requiring urgent assistance in the district, and if we manage to solicit more donations, BPC will also donate to Nsanje and Blantyre.”

On his part Harawa said the reggae outfit was happy to partner with Blantyre press club for the noble cause of assisting the victims.

“Throughout the existence of the band we have worked with individual members of BPC and we found it an honour when we were invited by the umbrella body to work with it in this humanitarian cause. This isn’t the first time for the people’s band to work for a humanitarian cause; we have done it before for the Karonga earthquake victims and Chikwawa flood victims. This has been done several times and we as Malawian citizens know that what affects one Malawian affects all Malawians,” said Harawa.

Rest Well DD Phiri
I sadly received news of the death of DD Phiri this morning. I knew DD Phiri in 1997 as a wanna-be journalist. He inspired me to acquire an education even where there was no brick-and-mortar institution to accommodate less academically gifted students of my ilk. He often told the story about how he acquired the great papers from the most prestigious universities, studying at home. I successfully studied A Level Law, Psychology and Economics with Cambridge University, thanks to him. Of course, the typewritten pamphlets were a mess!

But in defense, he would say these were meant to be a start. He would add, “You have to read more on your own”. Of course, when I went in class to study journalism years later, I realized learning can indeed be spoon feeding. However, much later when I studied for the prestigious and highly challenging Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) courses long after “forgetting” about the obsolete DD Phiri’s Aggrey Memorial School, the study skills I had acquired – long before Google Scholar – came handy and I nailed it. As we mourn DD Phiri today, I dedicate my academic success to him. During our time, only star students had access to tertiary education. Many not-so-bright school leavers like myself turned to him for an education.

The diplomas he issued may not be relevant anymore but his inspiration was a launchpad for many of us. Today, I can bet on it, I can embark on a learning journey on any subject and I will end very well. DD Phiri taught me the art of learning. That’s my testimony! It’s a shame I did not celebrate him whilst he lived. It’s heart rendering I never had his picture. But in my memory, an image of him wearing a gentleman’s hat, a neck tie, a coat and jersey inside, his big spectacles on and walking whilst holding an umbrella on a sunny day along the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds footpath will forever remain etched on my highly indebted mind.

Many may not realise it, but DD Phiri is the father of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Malawi. Technological disruption hindered many from tapping from his wisdom on the art of teaching oneself, in your own space… And did I say anything about his prolific writing in the Nation Newspaper? Did I even say what a fine historian DD Phiri was? There are many stories to be told about this son of the soil! (Copied from Mallick Mnela’s facebook page)

The hightable during the colourful event

Member of Parliament for Dowa Central constituency, Dr. Jean Nachika Kaliliani has launched a whooping K3.5 million gospel music trophy in the district.

This is the second after Kaliliani launched a K5.5 million football and netball trophies with all the competitions coming to a climax towards the end of March, this year.

Speaking after the launch, Dr. Kaliliani who is also minister of Lands, Housing and Urban development said the competition seeks to unearth talent and skills in gospel music in the district.

Dr. Kaliliani said the competition will offer a platform for different choirs from various denominations to interact and learn from each other and at the same time sharing experiences.

In his remarks, Chairperson for the Mponela pastors Fraternal, Reverend Benjamin Shumba, said the competition would greatly help spread the gospel to reach out to all people in the district including the hard to reach areas.

Rev. Shumba said the competition will also improve the spiritual life of the communities by fighting all forms of Gender Based Violence, sexual harassment, burglary and theft, committing suicide and other forms of vices.

Speaking at the colourful event, guest of honour DPP presidential running mate, Everton Chimulirenji urged all Malawians to practise togetherness as the Democratic Progressive Party seeks to continue developing the country.

Chimulirenji said he was amused on how people of the district participated in the festival observing a large crowd that came to grace the festival as if it was a political party meeting.

Impressive:Part of the mammoth crowd that patronised the event

He thanked people of the district for being God fearing as demonstrated by them coming in their large number.

The running mate said Dr. Kaliliani is setting a good example for women that they are leading in decision making policies and positions saying developing the country rests in the hands of all Malawians regardless of their party affiliations.

Chimulirenji then delivered a message of hope to the people of the district from Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika that he will continue to develop all areas so that development projects are implemented in the interest of all Malawians whether they are in the urban centres and rural villages.

Gagusta (Right)

A lineup of talented Malawian urban artists say all is set for the Urban Music Splash slated for this coming Sunday at Mayfair Hall (Five Avenue, situated next to Sultain Habhu Park) in the Republic of South Africa
(RSA).

Malawian guest artists expected to perform at the show include female raga artist Kwin Bee of ‘Ndizakudandaula’ fame, Gagusta, Kelvin and Maya Noel. The show is expected to be spiced up by upcoming urban music creams in the league of Waya, Tumix, Manzy, Ovious, Kay Dee, Edo Crosh, Genesis, Novice and many others.

Courtesy of K.G Entertainment, the Urban Music Splash seeks to celebrate urban music and promote commercial music career among up and coming artists based in South Africa, according to Focus Gagusta, one of the organizers.
“South Africa is home to talented young urban entertainers who ought to be given opportunity to showcase their potential as well as commercialize their art. Therefore, the Urban Music Splash happens to be one of the rare platforms to materialize this,” said Gagusta, who is also an artist.

Kwin Bee: Set to light up the stage

Gagusta also urged upcoming Malawian artists to be composing creative and mature songs as well as perfect their stage work in order to commercialize their art.

“The music industry is competitive. It is the survival of the fittest. But let me take this opportunity to urge upcoming urban artists to perfect their art to attract support. Only those who are serious with their
composition and stage work can clinch the market,” said Gagusta.

On her part, Kwin Bee said she was set to conquer the stage. Lately, the female raga artist has been partaking in a number of live music shows in South Africa.

“I am ready for the Urban Music Splash. This is going to be another rare opportunity to entertain fans,” said Kwin Bee.

From ‘Tiri Ndi Yesu Wamayankho’ to ‘Tiri Ndi Castel Beer Woledzeletsa’……Patience Namadingo to host Castel Beer launch tonight

BY HOWARD MLOZI, A CONTRIBUTOR

Wonders shall never end…so goes a popular adage. Top-notch gospel artist Patience Namadingo, who has been winning many souls to Jesus Christ through his music, is tonight expected to play double standards as he is expected to win souls to Castel Beer as per demands of a his new role as a host of the official launch of the new brand.

Basically, a host receives or entertain guests socially, commercially or officially.

Namadingo is expected to host the launch of Castel Beer tonight at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe. His manager Tonderai Jai Banda confirmed the news, saying it is true his artist will host the beer launch.

The ‘Tiri Ndi Yesu’ hitmaker will host the launch, courtesy of Castel Malawi, the manufacturer of the new beer brand.

With K10, 000 at the door, participants will receive three bottles of Castel Beer.

“Castel Beer, the taste of success” is the motto of the new Castel brand which Namadingo is probably going to state as a host of the event. For some hours or so the gospel artist will be forced to drop the Book of Life (the Bible), which he has been referring to as a “Taste of successful life”.

Meanwhile, the flyer of the beer launch (depicting Patience Namadingo as the official host) has gone viral on the social media, sparking heated debate in some groups.

However, some quarters argue Namagingo has been caught in a tight fix of balancing business and preaching the word of God through music.

“Music is a business. I see nothing wrong with Namadingo hosting the beer launch,” wrote Vinjeru Soko.

However, some fans feel Namadingo has gone too far if his ministry of gospel music is anything to go by.

“Imagine, tonight is hosting a beer launch and tomorrow a gospel show. Will people take him seriously? I am not judging but this doesn’t reflect well,” said Patrick, another music fan.

However, there has also been a debate whether singing gospel music certifies one to be God-fearing or Born-Again Christian.

According to the New World Encyclopedia (www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_music),
the creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of Gospel music varies according to culture and social context. It is composed and performed for many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as entertainment for the marketplace.

Choirmaster Chakwera Should Shut-Up On ‘Atibera Volume 6’

Chakwera and his Atibera Band

I honestly think Chakwera is confused or up to confusing us. His fellow hot contenders are glued to their TV and closely following announcement of unofficial results through our media houses.

But there he is declaring himself as the winner of the presidential election at a press conference. Frankly, This has been one of the best organised elections in history, let’s wait for figures to dictate who should be celebrating.

Mr. Chakwera should, if anything, be bringing together his evidence of rigging if he doesn’t trust the system. Less than 20 percent of votes officially announced, Chakwera’s remarks represent best what any sane leader must never do. Talking about blood shade at this level.. I am disappointed, let Malawians decide.

Chakwera must be the last person to be reminded patience is virtuous. He should wait MEC to do due diligence to the process. Official results will be counted and officially announced by end of eight days stipulated in electoral laws. Chakwera should just keep excitement on reports tabulated by his party to himself. Rigging should never be condoled, but there is no any evidence or beckoning of rigging, so we can still wait.

Albert Sharra has bagged more awards than any other journalist in Malawi

Wits Adjunct professor of Journalism Franz Kruger has described the university’s political studies PhD student Albert Sharra as hardworking and sharp journalist.

Kruger said this in reaction to Sharra’s recent achievements during the 2019 Media Institute of Southern Africa–Malawi chapter’s World Press Freedom Day Commemoration. The Wits trained journalist was named Journalist of the Year for the third time in four consecutive years at the Annual Media Awards Gala held as part of the celebrations. Sharra is the first to win the overall award more than twice and consecutively in Malawi.

“It was great working with him,” said Kruger, who also supervised Sharra’s MA thesis in 2017.

He added that Sharra’s achievements were proof that “The department continues to attract high calibre journalists.”

The multi-award winner beat 33 other journalists to be declared Journalist of the Year after winning in the education journalist and paediatric and Adolescent HIV journalist of the year categories. The Wits Journalism graduate achieved the same feat in 2016 and 2017 in a back to back triumph. In 2018, he won the most prized MISA-UN SDGs award decorated with a cash prize of $2000.

Journalism Heroic: Sharra showcasing one of his awards

This year, he was recognised for articles published by National Publications Limited (NPL), including, ‘Long walk to school: Tales from rural areas’; ‘Coping with long distance to access education’; and ‘Neglected HIV traps: Minors living dangerously. The latter article stood out as the overall winner for exposing gaps in protecting minors in preadolescent age from new HIV infections.

Sharra told Wits Vuvuzela that for the past 10 years, he has been writing to raise debates and to add values to the community rather than filling space. “I graduated from being a breaking news reporter. I have been a journalist who wants to tell a story from where my fellow journalists are not looking at,” he said.

Alfred Ntonga, deputy CEO and head of the editorial department at NPL told Wits Vuvuzela that the heroes in Sharra’s articles are struggling girls, orphans and farmers who are “the ordinary people in villages who make up 80% of the Malawian population”.

“Malawi hinges on journalists of Sharra’s calibre. He is an unassuming achiever who has probably bagged more awards than any other journalist in Malawi,” Ntonga said.

Sharra joined Wits Journalism Masters programme in 2017 after winning the prestigious KAS Media Africa scholarship. He later won the Wits Merit Award for his PhD and also the Canon Collins Trust scholarship to fund his studies for three years. He is an accomplished achiever whose work continues to be recognised locally and beyond.

“It’s only God who knows what my future holds. My secret is working hard and I will not stop even though I am out of mainstream media because I know every career comes with its opportunities,” said Sharra.

Lulu: More than ready to showcase his talent during the event

Two of Malawi’s celebrated and sought-after musicians, Faith Mussa and Lulu say they are set to light up Standard Bank Be More Race when they take to the stage during the event scheduled for this Saturday at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

The two musicians are part of a lineup of performances to spice up this year’s Be More Race program.

Faith Mussa is an afro Soul singer, songwriter and guitarist who boasts of performing at some of the world most respected festivals while on the other hand, Lulu – who also owns Mathumela Band- is a renowned Malawian R&B pioneer whose captivating silky voice sets him apart in the industry.

Mussa says participants at this year’s race should brace for a performance that will leave an indelible mark on their hearts.

“Participants at the race should expect an amazing performance full of surprises from me and my band. I will share some music form my upcoming album that will be launched in the United Kingdom in August. It will be an exciting time for everyone,” said Faith in an interview a day before he arrived from Germany where he had gone to perform.

He added, “This event will be more than what people think. From me and Standard Bank we are planning an amazing day. I have always aimed at doing more than just singing a song so I will fuse in creativity and excitement in my performances.”

Faith Mussa: It is always important for me as an artist to align with leading and progressive brands

On his choice to perform at Be More Race, Faith highlighted how his career needs brands that are associated with progress.

“It is always important for me as an artist to align with leading and progressive brands. Everyone knows that Standard Bank is one of the leading banks in Malawi and even in Africa. As a global artist myself I feel that this is a good relationship and it can only prosper,” said he.

Also weighing in on his impending performance, Lulu said he is more than ready to showcase his talent during the event.

“I have been practicing hard for the event together with my band. Last time I performed at Be More Race was at the inaugural event in 2017 where I only used an acoustic guitar. I expect my comeback to be memorable because my music has matured since then,” said Lulu.

Standard Bank Head of Marketing and Communications, Thoko Unyolo, described the availability of the two artists as a valuable addition to the event.

“It is a privilege to let the Be More community interact with two great musicians whose careers are defined by progress and determination. We believe that performances by Faith and Lulu on the day will elevate the entertainment component of the event and participants should look forward to the show” says Unyolo.

Other performances on the day include Malawi Police Band and traditional dances.

Besides the race and performances, the day has also been set apart as fun day for families where stalls of food on sale and kids play area will be demarcated to serve the participants.

Mangochi, July 22, Mana: Airtel Malawi on Saturday crowned Mr and Miss DMI St. John’s University to promote the mobile network service provider’s new Chezani bundle among students in various colleges across the country.

Twenty-year-old Darwin Msiska and Takondwa Mhango, 21, were crowned Mr and Miss DMI, respectively.

Airtel’s Assistant Marketing Manager Marcia Kamanga said DMI St. John’s University is among 21 colleges across the country that the company has earmarked to tour and sell the new Chezani bundle to students.

“We are targeting 21 colleges in the country and, so far, DMI is the third.

“We want to sell the brand to students because we understand that students love, and use our network. So, with the new Chezani bundle, they will stay connected and enjoy the service,” Kamanga said.

The Airtel’s new Chezani bundle accords customers a chance to purchase voice bundles on daily, weekly and monthly basis at a cheaper rate than they would spend at an ordinary rate.

“Customers who purchase the bundle would have a platform to communicate with other people using Airtel network anywhere at a cheaper price.

“This bundle is very convenient and affordable because, even with K100, one is able to buy minutes and talk to friends and family,” Kamanga said.

Mhango said she was excited to be the first Miss DMI at an event organized by “the biggest network company in Malawi.”

“Airtel network is generally loved by the majority of the youths in the country due to its youth-friendly packages such as the Chezani bundle.

“I urge my fellow youth to start buying the new Chezani bundle,” said Mhango, a 3rd Year Business Administration student at the university.

Both Mhango and Msiska got K50, 000 and a 4G router each from Airtel for attaining the titles of Miss and Mr DMI, respectively.

DMI University students’ union president Benard Gauti hailed Airtel for supporting the event describing it as the first of its kind at the university.

Renowned Nigerian gospel artist Bucci spiced up the event with live music as Airtel splashed various prizes including airtime, branded T-shirts and caps to lucky winners who answered questions concerning the new Airtel Chezani bundle.

All Set For Free ‘Thanksgiving Gospel Festival’ in Blantyre

BY MBC ONLINE

Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre will be the epicenter of worship this coming Saturday and Sunday as about 15 top local gospel artists are holding what they have called Thanksgiving Gospel Festival, all for free.

Billed to perform at the feast are Ndirande Anglican Voices, The Great Angels Choir, Steve Muriya, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Thoko Katimba, King James Phiri, Favored Martha, Allan Chirwa, Limbani Simenti, and Princess Chitsulo among others.

Chief organizer of the two-day-long festival, Dennis Kalimbe, of the Ndirande Anglican Voices, said the event has been organised to give back to the society for the ‘support’ that Malawians have given to gospel music over the years.

“These people have made us to be what we are today. We thought it was important to honour each and every soul for their unwavering support,” said Kalimbe at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He said the support gospel music receives in the country is better than what secular musicians get.

He said that due to financial constraints they have failed to include more artists on the menu. He was however, optimistic that once resources are available, they will organise similar shows in other regions where other artists will be invited.

Kalimbe said people’s security and sanitation have been looked into with keen interest as the venue is an open ground. Performances are scheduled to be starting from 11pm and ending at 5pm on each of the two days.

So far the organisers have benefited from the generosity of Entertainers Promotions and Mzati TV who have contributed unspecified sums of money towards the cause. The event organisers are also in partnership with a number of local radio stations.

A Look into Skeffa Chimoto’s Latest Single ‘Dala’

$

0

Last evening, someone dropped a new song of Skeffa Chimoto in one of the WhatsApp chartrooms I belong.

Skeffa Chimoto

It is comment on Malawi’s current state of affairs and my initial reaction was that Skeffa has perfectly fitted into the void: the voice of reason.

In the song, Skeffa is reminding us that above power and wealth, we should be valuing the peace that we are globally known for.

Ndi ife a mphawi, ndalama ndiyovuta, chuma chathu ndi mtendere/ Anthu onsewa akuthawa kwawo sikuti kunalibe ndalama/ Ali ndi siliva, golide, diamond- koma mtendere kulibe’

Judging from where we are coming. Our peacefulness. We have done the worst but it’s not too late to shake ourselves from the consciousness slumber. He warns:

‘Zimayamba ndipang’ono pang’ono kuponyelana ma phuzo/ Mkwiyo uja wakula, phuzo lija lachepa nkuyamba kuponyerana miyala’ and this is exactly where we are.

But if we don’t listen to this lone preacher, this is where we are heading:

Miyala ija yachepa mkwiyo uja ukukulabe nkuyamba kunola dzikwanje/ Dzikwanje dzachepa ena alowelera nkuyamba kugawa mfuti’

I don’t know the title of this song, but am calling it ‘Dala’. This is from the chorus:

‘Tisaononge dziko kamba kodzikonda/ Kenaka nkumadzati Mbuye mwaloranji/ Ilo ndi dala/ Malawi ndi dala/ Kuzunzitsa amai ndi ana. Nkhalamba kusowa kolowera/ Ichi ndi chipongwe/Malawi pewa chibwana’

And to those of you who wrongly think one can’t be MCP in Thyolo, DPP in Dowa and UDF in Rumphi, Pastor Chimoto has this sermon for you:

‘Palibe tchimo kusapota chipani umachikonda/ Sikupalamula kusankha mtsogoleri wakumtima kwako/Koma zonsezi tipange mwachikondi ndimosungilana ulemu’

On where Skeffa talked about graduation from mere verbal war to pelting stones to zikwanje up to guns, he said ‘ENA ALOWELERA NKUYAMBA KUGAWA MFUTI’

As a Malawian, Skeffa understands  what Malawians are not capable of financing themselves. And he seems to be aware that the well coordinated-ness of some of the post elections happenings is being achieved with funding from elsewhere across the boarders and he warns:

‘Polandira ma thandizo akunja mudzionesetsa/ Poti si onse amapeleka ndi mtima wachikondi/ Mabungwe ena ntchito zawo sidzitheka mu dziko lopanda nkhondo/ Chuma chawo ndi nyambo akuyambanitseni mudzidulana makosi/ Iwo mtima mbeee kumatola zithunzi nkumatumiza kwawo/Anthu achifundo kumasonkha ndalama iwo nkumalemera’

And to the youth? ‘Mukamajijirika ku ntchito zabwino dziko limapindura/ Koma musalolere kugwilitsidwa ntchito ndi anthu odzikonda/ Asakusandutseni dzigawenga chifukwa cha ndalama’

But something is missing in ‘Dala’. You see, after appealing to the consciousness of politicians, NGOs, youth and Malawians in general, Skeffa is deadly silent on the role of religious leaders at this crucial hour. Why?

Is the silence an echo to our preachers’ own silence? Is the pulpit empty and Skeffa is protesting? Or is the moral decadence that has brought us to this end a vivid sign of Malawi Church’s failure? And this lone prophet who once told us that ‘Ndiife Amodzi Tikondane’ carrying a placard written: A CHRIST-LESS CHURCH MUST FALL?

Skeffa has delivered a sermon, but unfortunately, to ears long waxed by partisanship.

Tay Grin captured at ECG

Malawi’s multi-award winning musician Tay Grin on Sunday attended prayers at Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s  Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church in South Africa.

The musician, also known as Nyau King, said his presence at the ECG was in the faith of praying for Malawi’s peace amidst political tension.

Tay whose real name is Limbani Kalilani, raised questions when he was captured on camera in the middle of the service. Since the church is owned by Prophet Bushiri who is also a successful businessperson, Malawians owed his trip to business motives.

It was only a matter of hours before the Nyau King came clean on his surprising attendance at ECG. While others defended him arguing he has a right to congregate at a church of his choice, some Malawians believe he is in for profits.

Kalilani has been in South Africa for months. He left soon after election results, which didn’t favour him, came out. He was contesting for a Lilongwe central parliamentary seat on t

By Ireen Kayira

Finalists for Mr and  Miss Albinism beauty pageant and talent show will enter camp on Wednesday in preparation for the show at Bingu Wa Mutharika International Convention Centre (BICC) on Saturday.

Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) chairperson for the organising committee Lucy Nkhoma said Saturday that 30 finalists who passed regional auditions will go straight to BICC from the camp.

“The finalists will camp at Linde Motel in Dowa District where they will have psychological preparation for the public appearance. There will also be coaching and training as well as makeup and grooming,” Nkhoma said.

She said camping is necessary because it is where the finalist will be supported and prepared so that they can give out the best out of them during the event.

However, she said APAM has a deficit in terms of the amount of money they planned to raise for the event.

“We have a deficit in our budget; we would like to request prospective partners and sponsors to partner us.

“So far, we have managed to raise about K35 million out of K72 million that they planned to raise for the event,” Nkhoma said.

Music, Feast Spice Up John The Baptist Day

Music spices up the festival

By Howard Mlozi

September 7, a day earmarked by Catholic Christians of Blantyre’s
Malingamoyo Ward to celebrate the Day of John the Baptist, shows
music, prayer and feast at its most moving, mystic and brilliance.

The Catholic faithful, especially the youth, went out of their houses
and join the crowd to make merry together. Christians are laughing
while enjoying all sorts of beverages. They toss the bottles in the
air. A St. John music choir is hammering melodious tunes. All these
meant to remember the role played by John the Baptist, who baptitised
Jesus Christ.

The day is celebrated differently across the world. Elsewhere the
feast day of Saint John the Baptist is observed by splashing water on
passerby or visitors.

But in the populous neighborhood of Chilobwe in Blantyre, people
celebrated the St. John the Baptist through music, feast and prayer.
The celebration started with a luncheon after a holy mass.

“We organized this celebration to commemorate Saint John the Baptist
with families and friends,” said Gabriel Mnima, chairperson of the
organizing committee.

St. John the Baptist was born in 1st decade BCE, Judaea, Palestine,
near Jerusalem—died 28–36 CE. His feast is celebrated on June 24.

He was a Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the imminence of
God’s Final Judgment and Baptized those who repented in
self-preparation for it, he is revered in the Christian Church
especially  Roman Catholic as the forerunner of Jesus Christ. After a
period of desert solitude, John the Baptist emerged as a prophet in
the region of the lower Jordan River Valley. He had a circle of
disciples and Jesus was among the recipients of his rite of baptism.

Anjiru (in front on stage), captured in action in this file photo, was a marvel to watch

Mangochi, September 23: Zitherepano Club in Mangochi became a centre of attraction on Friday night as Black Missionaries Band dished out its best performance to mark the club’s 22nd anniversary.

The Chileka-based reggae band had their equipment set by 21:30 p.m with Khozi Masimbe raising the curtain followed by Yanjanani Chumbu who dished out different songs to keep the fans warm for the big act.

At every given opportunity throughout the show, Ras Peter Amidu, the band’s bassist, kept reminding the audience that politics should not be given room to divide the love that exists among Malawians.

The show gained momentum when Moda Fumulani got the mic and dished out different songs including those of his late brother, Gift.

This was the first time for Moda to perform in Mangochi since he reunited with the band.

The Black’s band leader, Anjiru Fumulani, stormed the stage in the early hours of Saturday with an apology for the absence of Mr. Cool Anthony Makondetsa due to poor health.

“I know most of you are surprised that Mr. Cool is not with us here. He has an eye problem and cannot perform,” explained Anjiru adding: “We apologize for that, but hopefully, we will be with him in our next shows.”

The anniversary show climaxed when Anjiru invited onto the stage the Managing Director of Zitherepano, Victoria Kingston, who was coincidentally celebrating her 47th birthday on the day.

“Today, we are in double celebration as Zitherepano has clocked 22 years and my sister here Kingston is also celebrating her 47th birthday,” disclosed Anjiru.

“Let us all join her in the double celebration as we appreciate the good relationship we have had with the management of Zitherepano for the past years,” he said.

Kingston thanked The Blacks for honouring the invitation and also the fans for patronising the show as well as honouring the day’s event.

“To everyone who has patronised this show, I say: we are Zithere because of you and I urge you all to continue supporting us in every activity,” said Kingston.

The show brought together people from almost across the country as it took place at a time when Institute of Chartered Accountants of Malawi held their conference by the lake side at Sun n Sand Hotel, which is few kilometers from Zitherepano.

During the show, patrons were randomly treated to free drinks and free brai as part of the celebrations.

Zitherepano Club has, in the past 22 years, hosted international artists like Ras Trever Hall from Jamaica, Awilo Longomba from DR Congo, Banyana Bafana from Zimbabwe, Mampi from Zambia, Makhilikhili from Botswana, and General Kanene from Zambia, among others.

The Club will host Kwa George hit maker, B1, from Zambia and Skeffa Chimoto the coming Friday.
