Airtel Malawi has announced the adjournment of its 25th Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was scheduled for today May 31, 2024.

The decision comes as the company withdraws its audited financial statements for the year ending December 31, 2023 and its dividend recommendation of MWK0.977 per share.

In a statement, company secretary Hlupekire Chalamba said the move follows a re-assessment of the accounting treatment for certain US$-indexed tower lease contracts recorded on the company’s balance sheet.

The revision, made in consultation with statutory auditors, is expected to result in a negative retained earnings position on the balance sheet as of December 31, 2023.

The company intends to revise its financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2023, and restate the financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2022.

The revised statements will be published at a later date, yet to be announced.

Airtel Malawi emphasized that the revision does not impact its strategy, operating strength, and resilience.

The company remains focused on network investment, customer and revenue growth, containing costs, and diversifying currency sourcing to mitigate exposure to foreign exchange volatility.

With a music career spanning over three decades, Banda started singing at the age of 13 with his brother Paul Banda and the Alleluya Band.

He released his first album, ‘Son of a Poor Man’, in 1993, which became popular due to hits like ‘Mabala’, ‘Get up stand up’, ‘Linda’, and ‘Life On Earth’.

He went on to form his own band, Zembani, and released 19 albums, promoting local musicians and addressing social and political issues in his music.

Renowned music icon and politician Lucius Banda, who died on Sunday in South Africa after a long battle with diabetes, has left behind an unfinished project, Malawi Voice has learnt.

Eliza Kachale Kaunda, Lucius Banda’s pioneering backing-vocalist, has disclosed that the music icon had been working on a project to bring together children of other fellow artists who are also into music.

Kachale-Kaunda, who backed the Cease Fire album, revealed that Lucius wanted to organize a musical concert and record an album.

Malawians have taken to social media to express their outrage and disappointment towards Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and government officials for their absence at the funeral of veteran broadcaster and television actor Hope Chisanu, who was laid to rest on Thursday in Lilongwe.

Chisanu, who spent over two decades working at MBC, was bid farewell by hundreds of mourners, including colleagues and friends, but notably without any representation from his former employer or the government.

This snub has sparked widespread criticism on Facebook, with many Malawians demanding respect and recognition for Chisanu’s contributions to the industry.

People are calling out MBC and the government for their apparent disregard for Chisanu’s legacy.

Thomas Psyata wrote on Facebook, “We’ve laid to rest a gem, Uncle Bemberezi – a humble talent gone too soon.

His dedication to MBC Digital spanned over two decades, yet his farewell was met with silence. Komano MBC, we could have honored his legacy better.”

The public’s outcry highlights the importance of acknowledging and honoring the contributions of individuals like Hope Chisanu, who have made significant impacts on the country’s entertainment industry.

Malawian musician Gibo Pearson has defied death once again, escaping unscathed from a road accident just months after surviving the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Freddy.

In a stunning turn of events, Pearson’s car crashed along the Zomba-Blantyre road on Sunday, leaving his vehicle beyond repair.
