Prominent Malawi TV presenter and showbiz host Priscila Kayira has been entangled in a possible client swindling incident over the weekend.

Reports indicate that she was paid the full amount to take up a gig at Sparc on Saturday but claimed she had not been paid and rushed to social media to rant.

We have information that on the 23rd of October, Priscila was paid K250,000 by Sparc as half payment to host a red carpet event last Saturday but claimed she had not received the money.

However, on Saturday, the 26th, she came to Sparc, fuming to a consultant events planner Temwa Luhanga that she had not been paid. Pressed to check and confirm, Priscila said: “I don’t receive notifications.”

To rectify the issue, authourities at Sparc intervened, apologised to her but in the process they discovered that the payment was made to her around 11:50 am and she went to social media around 12: 30 pm when she had already been paid another K250,000.

“She confirmed receiving the K250,000 while her post damaging Sparc reputation was still trending on X (former Tweeter) and facebook. In the post, she said she would not be hosting the event due to iltreatment by the hired events planner,” said the source.

Later, Sparc MD Dr. Wisely Phiri called her to consider returning the money now that she had made a decision not to host the event.

“Surprisingly,” said the source, “she only returned the money but refused to take down the post, insisting that she could only take down the post if she was allowed to keep the money. This was a shocking blackmail from the young lady. “

Kayira in hot soup

However, it transpired on Monday that even the payment that was made to her on 23rd October went through, but she has kept refusing despite screenshots being sent to her to prove that the transaction was effected.

“Perhaps she wants to keep the money without working for it. It is sad she she behaved this way on a client who apologised and kept sending her money without her checking the notifications, if we were to buy her story,” further narrated our source.

A cross section of people who commented on her online post, described as emotional, and that she must learn to sort issues with clients before taking them to public.

Meanwhile, lawyers from Sparc, have demanded Kayira to apologize and retract the post within 48hours.

Reggae Musician Ndindi Mally: His story and mind

$

Last week, during the Burning Spear concert at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, veteran reggae musician Limbani Banda shared his time on stage with Ndindi Mally. And some patrons asked ‘who is this guy? So Malawi Voice, on their behalf, had a chat with the reggae star:

Who is Ndandi Mally?

My real name is Emmanuel M Mally Ndasowa. I was born at Zomba Central Hospital in Zomba city Malawi 1980. I was born in a family of four children, however, my eldest Sister recently passed away. My mother is Ms Jessie Katsonga and I do not know who my father is.

The name Emmanuel was given to me by my mother, who later wedded my then stepfather, Mr Kelton Ndindi, and because my stepfather was a good man and raised me well, playing the vital role of the father figure for me and my sibblings, I chose to incorporate his name into mine in order to honor him as the father I never had.Sadly, after a fifteen year marriage, he and my mother later separated due to irreconcilable differences.

Regardless of all of that, me and him still keep in touch and will forever be in good terms. The letter M in my name stands for Mphako which was given to me by my late grandfather Mr Chester Katsonga, a seasoned business man and politician who cofounded and headed the Christian Democratic Party.

In his latter years, most of his property was confiscated by political enemies forcing him to move to his last piece of property, his farm at 4 miles in Zomba which in present day is situated by the Zomba roadblock. On this farm he had a bar with a single room which he chose to inhabit. He would often lament in misery when he reflected on his life and would constantly state and I quote ‘Panopa ndili mu chibowo’ which in the Yao language translates to ‘Mphako’ to exclaim how he was in a deep dark whole, all alone, feeling betrayed and abandoned by the people he once aided. The name Ndasowamally is quite controversial because it is a combination of two names. Ndasowa, a name which constantly came in my research when I was probing into who my biological father was.Due to other reasons, I would not feel comfortable in disclosing further information on this part.I ended up choosing my own surname and added the name Mally at the very end as a tribute to the late legendary reggae artist Bob Marley whome I strongly revered and idolized as a young boy.

He is the reason I am the man you know to be Ndindi Mally today I am a single father of 3.

And musically, whats your background?

When between the ages of 7-11, I was living in Sadzi and had a friend by the name Patrick Nyezerera. I along with my other friends would head out to Patrick’s house, because they had a broken down scrap yard car at his parents house. We would play in it with sticks using the dashboard as a drum and compose songs until late in the night when our parents would eventually come searching for us.

On the turn of the new millennium, I made a friend by the name Noel Mtambo at CCAP Sunday school and happened to live close to our new home.He had 3 sisters, & one thing we all had in common was that we loved music. They had nice music equipment but couldn’t compose lyrics or sing, I could do both but had no equipment.

Long story short, I quickly became the lead singer of the band. We became ‘U turn souls’Our name was given to us by a childhood friend we grew up looking up to till this. He would create a guitar from materials such as 5 liter king oil empty drums disposed from refugee camps , recycling it with a rod and a few spokes in place of strings, composing his own songs to his own tunes and karaoke.

I had lived with him since my former days in Sadzi and now in St Mary’s too. He was a star then and is still a star now.You may know him as Limbanie Banda. It didn’t last long because as youth we collectively didn’t have the seriousness, dedication and consistency one is required to have at that age.

Often we had education day at our secondary school High Density Secondary School in the township, Arthur Strings, Police Band, Songani Band, Freedom Band would come to entertain us at Zomba community Centre.

The Master of ceremonies that day gave an opportunity to the crowd to come and sing a Karaoke song to Bob Marley’s Put it on classic song. I knew his songs like the back of my hand. I stood out from the crowd and walked up to the stage and gallantly gave it my all and spiced it up with a freestyle at the end.

The crowd went crazy, looking at a nappy haired light skinned Malawian boy sing and move with confidence like the lion himself in his hay days.It didn’t take long until Amon Ngudeyi the owner of the Freedom Band decided to add me to his music group right on stage.

To date, what would you point as an achievements?

After my short stint with them, I went solo an started looking for promoters eventually running into Professor Edge Kanyongolo who sponsored my first singles known as ‘Ulimbo and Amaiopa’ produced by Chuma Soko and Jay Jay Munthali.Ulimbo ended up being number one on MBC in 2002.

While Amaiopa didn’t achieve the same feat but had enjoyed constant airplay and left lasting impression on some popular local dj’s at the time such as Phillip ‘Philtouch’ Kalindawalo and Gift Mabeya Mbeya ( Andalabambo) as well as Mike Chilimampunga and Jen Jen. Most of the youth today may not know them. I would like to salute them may they receive their flowers.

During my upbringing, I learned the art of painting. This skill has become second nature to me and apart from my success as a musician, one of my greatest passions in life is painting. With the money from Professor Kanyongolo and the savings I had from painting at my first company True Love Art and Signs , I released an album knonn as ‘ Moto wa gas’ produced by Ralph Ching’amba in 2006. It had 8 songs including ‘Ndigona kuno’, MBC and music splash can testify to the profound impact this song had on the nations entertainment scene in general at the time.

My hunger for success grew and I felt I had proved myself in Malawi, I wanted to go on the international stage and perform with the greats. I managed to get in touch with Lucky Dube on Facebook, we had some great conversations.

He ended up inviting me to South Africa for a collaboration On transit to South Africa, I had travelled to Botswana with a friend to resolve a business deal. We ended up staying longer than planned whilst there, word got to me that Lucky had been assassinated.

Final Remarks?

I have never been one to give up, because I never had a choice. Music is all I know, it has always been my escape and my Solace. I have always been fearless in pursuing my dreams and have always believed in myself because nobody was there to believe in me.Though I am a fatherless man, I am a proud father of 3 children.

Life has taught me not to stop and look back at where am coming from but rather to keep moving forward focus on where I am going.I have adapted my knowledge and style to fit the times, putting out more music at a faster pace than ever before, engaging on new modern day platforms such as youtube and spotify and brushing shoulders as I share the stage with legends such as Burning Spear as well as my childhood friend & brother Lambanie Dube.

There is a local proverb that says & I quote ‘ just because a lion is wet, it does not mean that it has transformed into a cat, it is still a lion’. After 20 years, 3 albums and tens of multiples of singles, I am in my golden years nearing my peak. I will give the world the very best of me until I neither have a voice nor life in me.I may fall along the way, but in true Ndindi Mally fashion, I will pick my self up. Surely in Judah the lion will roar again.

Ben’s soulful voice and masterful guitar work brought a depth and richness to the track that’s unforgettable

Ben Michael Mankhamba continues to hold significant relevance in the local music industry, as demonstrated by his remake of ‘Mphungu Sataya Mthenga.’ This version poignantly addresses the issue of selfishness in society, urging his audience to reflect on the importance of community and shared values.

“Selfishness undermines the very fabric of our society and is not what our country needs to thrive. In Malawi, we have a rich culture rooted in community, empathy, and collaboration. Emphasizing the importance of sharing our resources, time, and knowledge should be at the forefront of our national values,” he says.

Mankhamba continues:

“As Malawians, it is not just a privilege but a responsibility to cultivate a spirit of generosity and support for one another. Our true beauty lies in our ability to uplift our fellow citizens, recognizing that their well-being contributes to our collective strength.

“By fostering a culture of solidarity, we can create a more harmonious and prosperous society. It is essential for each of us to actively remind others of this value, encouraging acts of kindness and cooperation that reflect our shared identity. Together, we can build a brighter future, united by the principle that our strength is in our connections and our willingness to share.”

In the song, Mankhamba features artist Chigo who says:

“Working with Ben Mankhamba is an honour and a dream come true. He is a legend in the Malawian music industry, and his experience and talent are unparalleled. His passion and dedication to his craft are contagious, and being in the studio with him was an incredible learning experience. He brings a unique energy and perspective to the table, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with him.”

Chigo continues:

“Collaborating with artists who appeal to different audiences is crucial for growth and expansion. It allows us to tap into new markets, explore fresh sounds, and create something truly unique. Working with Ben Mankhamba, for instance, has introduced me to a new generation of music lovers and helped me understand the nuances of traditional Malawian music. It’s essential to push boundaries and challenge ourselves creatively.”

Chigo says Ben Mankhamba’s “legacy extends beyond his music because he is a cultural ambassador, a storyteller, and a keeper of Malawian heritage. Working with him has been a humbling experience, and I have learnt so much about the country’s history, traditions, and values.”

He adds: “This collaboration has also reminded me of the power of music to bridge gaps and bring people together. Our song is a testament to the beauty of Malawian music and its ability to transcend generations and genres.”

The song blends two styles in a way that it is both authentic and innovative. It’s a fusion of traditional and modern sounds, with a message that resonates with people from all walks of life.

The song’s theme of unity and cultural pride is particularly important in today’s world. Ben’s soulful voice and masterful guitar work brought a depth and richness to the track that’s unforgettable.

Music and painting under one brain is a distinctive feature in one artist, Zam Suya.

Born in 1971 to the late Wyson and Eunice Suya of Bunyenga Village, T/A Makwangwala in Ntcheu.

He told Malawi Voice: “My talent of fine arts introduced me to Graphic Design and I have worked with a number of printi

Suya ventured into music in 1998 when he joined his brother Gideon Suya in his album titled “Kuyeretsa Mayendedwe” with a song titled “Maziko”.

But Zam is biased towards cultural music: “Following my interest in cultural music, I came up with an all percussion album called ‘Bwenzi Zikoma’ in the year 2000.

A Painting By Zam Suya Tittled ‘Parental Care’

He said music from this project enjoyed airplay mostly on Trans World Radio and this encouraged him a lot.

“From this album, I contributed a song called ‘Polowa mu Yerusalemu’ to a big, quality conscious choir called Blantyre Joint Choir under its cultural music promotion Sing Malawian Gospel”.

When asked what he would point as his achievement musically, Zam said the releasing of his two albums: Bwenzi Zikoma and Ndiyamika, as well as singles: Dzalani Nkhalango and Adze kwa Yesu.

A Painting Tittled ‘Ubunye Bunamandla’ meaning ‘Unity Is Power’

On top of that? “My music is celebrated in different cultural events. In 2021, I held a cultural event called ‘Ndiyamika Cultural Interaction’ which was attended by both local and international patrons and this assures me I am really contributing well to the tourism industry.

Still, Zam is not satisfied: “I would like to grow more musically so that I convey constructive messages to masses. I would like to introduce more youths to the art for self expression and earning a living”.

And this is his message to the world: ” I would like to urge all people to work with artists in different areas because this will play a big role in job creation which is one of our national goals.

“We also need to promote our cultural music. I would like to request organisations and individuals to make maximum use of our cultural products in corporate and family events”.

Captured At Ndiyamika Cultural Interaction

And to the parents he says: “When we noticed some that artistic talent in our child, let us encourage them to make it grow because opportunities are widening nowadays”.

Zam Suya is married to Madalo Dinala since 2008 and together they are blessed with 3 children, all boys. He stays in Blantyre at Chemusa.

Lilongwe, November 11, Mana: The race for the 2024 Miss and Mrs Culture Malawi is on as 12 young women have been chosen to battle it out in pursuit of the crown.

The aspirants came into the limelight early this year and have since been participating in exercises that will deem one the Queen.

Spearheader of the event and founder of Miss Culture Global, Lorraine Kljajic, said they received an overwhelming number of applications from hopefuls from all the four regions of the country with over 150 on and offline auditions. Through a rigorous vetting process the top 12 emerged.

Kljajic highlighted that this year’s event will be different from its predecessors since the launch of Miss Culture Malawi in 2021.

“We are excited to show an array of cultural performances and people should expect a vibrant celebration of creativity along with thought provoking discussions on social issues,” she explained.

Kljijac added that their objective is to advocate for women empowerment and the promotion of tourism through the many cultural experiences they offer.

Reigning Miss Culture, Ireen Navicha, encouraged this year’s contestants to take the pageant seriously as it is a means to other opportunities both in Malawi and in international spaces.

“Dreams do not just come true; you need to have determination, courage and have to work hard for them,” she said.

Navicha said in the course of her reign she has founded a youth volunteer organization, Greynaivies Foundation, which promotes education and cultural diversity.

Soldier Lucius Banda

Titled Soja: The Lucius Banda Documentary, the film was directed and produced by journalist Jack Mcbrams along with German anthropologist Rupert Poesch, in collaboration with 4Kaya Films.

Work for the documentary initially started before Soldier died, after battling kidney failure, in June this year.

“We began working on this documentary with Soldier before he passed. When he died, I felt it was important to finish what we had started, to ensure that his incredible legacy lives on,” Mcbrams explained.

Soldier and the Film’s Producer Jack Mcbrams

The documentary is being funded by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) through its Universal Service Fund.

Mcbrams emphasized the significance of preserving Soldier’s life story, pointing out that his contribution to Malawi’s music scene was extraordinary.

Icing on the cake: Lucius and Namadingo

“The motivation for doing this documentary is that we should be able to tell our own stories. We owe it to ourselves to celebrate our heroes, and Soldier was no ordinary musician,” Mcbrams said.

If the film’s trailer currently circulating on social media is anything to go by, the documentary featured a blend of live performances and interviews with key figures in Soldier’s career.

Among those are veteran producer Tapps Bandawe and renowned promoter Mr. Entertainer Jai Banda, Patience Namadingo and Banda’s immediate members of his family, notably his son Jonny Zembani who now leads the Zembani Band.

Soldier Lucius Banda’s music career spanned over 30 years, during which he released 20 albums, including Down Babylon, Unity, Survivor, Cell 51, and Cease Fire. His unique sound, blending traditional Malawian rhythms with contemporary styles, earned him a devoted following across Malawi and beyond.

One of Malawi’s celebrated media personality, Chifundo Anthony Ntwana better known as DJ Boo has stood the taste of time when it comes to staying relevant in Malawi music industry.

After leaving the country at the peak of his career and returning back home after more than 10 years in Cape Town, South Africa where he has been sharpening his art and learning new tricks from top DJs, DJ Boo has taken that leap of faith and comes back home to continue where he left off 11 years ago.

“As the saying goes, when you’re good at something even after staying away for so long you can get back on track just like riding a bike,” he said .

DJ Boo started deejaying in 2005 after getting introduced to the industry by his best friend DJ famous who had been in the game for a long time also winning “sprite DJ of the year Africa”

DJ Boo has previously won DJ of the year in 2011 as well as deejayed and represented Malawi at Big Brother Africa amplified.

He has also previously worked for FM 101 Power Malawi, Bush Radio in Cape Town South Africa, EI Radio, Amaryllis E Radio and Mibawa TV.

He has deejayed Stakeout (at Amaryllis Hotel), Blues Bar and Restaurant, Twiga lounge, Blue diamond, Sunset Plaza, Cactus, Chez Ntemba (BT), Chez Ntemba (LL), Chez Ntemba (Cape Town), Joburg and Pretoria Bar (Cape Town), Marvel Bar (Cape Town), 169 (Cape Town), Abantu (Cape Town), Zazu (Cape Town), Coco (Cape Town), Mojitos (Cape Town), Caprice (Cape Town), Imperial (Cape Town), Bobs bar (Cape Town), Stones (Cape Town), Fiction( Cape Town), The Loop (Cape Town), Radison Blue (Cape Town 5 star hotel) and The Summit (Cape Town).

Speaking from experience, DJ Boo said Malawi needs to start monetizing and stay authentic so that our music can have identity if our music is to go international like Amapiano or Reggae.

Commenting on why he should be voted as Best Club DJ 2024 Maso Awards, DJ Boo said, “DJ Boo has been in the game for two decades and has learned from the true legends of the DJ and music industry when it comes to sound engineering, DJ equipment and music.

“He was there before Deejaying was simplified from DJs using actual CDs or vinyl (the true best matching) to only using a laptop (automix and beat match).”

He added that he deserves to be voted DJ of the year for staying relevant after all these years and keeping to professional DJ standards always aiming to deliver on every booking.

“It’s not the equipment that plays the music but the DJ,” he concluded.

Commenting on how he named himself DJ Boo, he said, “It used to be “baby boo” a nickname that girls called me from high school that my classmates shortened it to boo and the rest is history.”
