Zembani Lodge In Balaka Reduced To Brothel, Plus Too Much Smell In Rooms, Dirty beddings

Dear Editor,

Lucius BandaLet me start by congratulating my good brother Lucius Banda for maintaining his tough stand against gays in Malawi. Thats the spirit my brother, we are Christians and we dont tolerate non Christian acts.

However my brother Lucius, I want to bring it to your attention that as you fight gays, also try to put efforts to bring back the standards of a lodge at Zembani that we used to know. Yesterday, as you were entering the gate of Zembani lodge in Balaka on your white benz, I was just right at the gate coming out of the lodge.

I went there to look for accommodation as I had a breakdown at Balaka as I was on my way to Lilongwe. The lodge has been reduced to a brothel and no one including you cares. I wanted to put up at Zembani to promote you sir my best musician. But alas, I ended up booking myself at ZUC lodge after finding Coconut Lodge fully occupied. At your lodge, too much smell in your rooms, uncomfortable matresses, dirty beddings and no air conditioners. I plead with you sir that as you fight gays, also fight for quality services at Zembani Lodge.

Yours’

Legendary Giddes Chalamanda
Legendary Giddes Chalamanda

Malawi’s acoustic music icon Giddes Chalamanda is set to perform in the United States of America (USA) on the Independence Day.

The trip automatically fulfils one of the lines in Bob Marley’s rendition ‘Buffalo Soldier’ where the 86year old Giddes talks of performing in the ‘free world’ if he had enough money.

The trip, dubbed ‘Giddes Coming to America Tour’ is being spearheaded by a team of Malawians comprising of Edgar ndi Davis duo, Blantyre City Mayor Noel Chalamanda, economist Wilkins Mijiga, lawyer Gift Mwakhwawa, E-wallet Manager Felix Njawala, media personalities Emmanuel Maliro, MacDonald Chapalapata and Frank Kapesa.

Addressing the media in Blantyre on Friday, Mijiga, who is chairperson of the ‘Giddes Coming to America Tour’ said his team felt duty bound to make the veteran guitarist’s  ‘If-I-had-enough-money-I-would-go-to-America’ dream come true.

“Giddes is the last man standing of his generation. He is a Malawian brand that can sell anywhere in the world. His USA tour is a Malawian tour,” said Mijiga.

He added Chalamanda will be accompanied by Edgar ndi Davis and gospel music star Patience Namadingo.

“The two week long tour will see Giddes hosting several gigs in the USA including a massive performance on Malawi’s Independence Day, and will among other things, conduct workshops on Malawi’s performance culture dubbed “Malawi Night” and interact with Malawians living in the US. The total cost of the trip is US$32 000 and equivalent of about Mk25million,” said Mijiga.

To raise this money, Mijiga said managers of the project will be reaching out to various companies for support, on top of organizing live performances across Malawi.

Concurring with Mijiga, Davis Njovu, of the Edgar ndi Davis duo, said the crew will launch the tour in Blantyre on March 4 and Lilongwe on March 5.

“At these shows Malawians will have a chance to interact up-close with the legend Giddes. Since this is about Malawi, we are happy to announce that any designer who is willing to come on board and design outfit for the crew and especially Giddes is welcome,” said Davis.

Taking his turn, Patience Namadingo said the fact that Malawi remain ‘invisible’ on the world map, gives it an open chance to break through in as far as exporting art was concerned.

“The world is scrambling for a new thing and Malawi is that new thing. The world has heard from Nigerians, Zimbabweans and South African-it is now time to hear from Malawi,” said Namadingo.

Giddes, who has been performing for over 50 years and has performed twice in Germany, is one of Malawi’s surviving old school maestro who is still active on stage.

The Zomba Prison Project

The Grammy Awards nominees, Zomba Prison Band is not attending the  top-of-the-class gala in the United States because the prisoners’ legal cases make international travel impossible.

The 2016 Grammys take place in Los Angeles, in the United States on 15 February.

The Zomba Prison band which is made up of inmates from one of Malawi’s most congested prisons, Zomba prison secured Malawi’s first ever Grammy nomination with their album ‘I have no everything here’.

According to American music producer Ian Brennan who worked with the Band to produce their album from the highly secured cells said the group will not be part of the audience when the results are announced at America’s biggest music awards, shortlisted for Best World Music Album.

The Zomba prisoners’ band will compete at the star-studded Gala with world music giants like Anoushka Shankar’s Home, Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s Music From Inala, Angelique Kidjo’s Sings and Gilberto Gil’s Gilbertos Samba Ao Vivo.

The band is made up of some murder convicts, however, laws of Malawi do not allow them to get out of the cells unless when faced with serious health problems.

Some of the songs in the album which was released in 2013 include “I have No Everything Here”, “Don’t Hate Me”, “Prison of Sinners”, “I See the Whole World Dying of AIDS” and “Please, Don’t Kill My Child”.

Although the little known band has received good media coverage Brennan who visited the band members in Zomba last week said it did not necessarily result in more sales for the Zomba Prison Project music.

Awakening The Sleeping King: The Case of Anne  Matumbi

Anne Matumbi
Anne Matumbi

`The originality of dancehall music traces back in the late 1970’s. King Yellow Man and Eek-a-Mouse were the pioneers of this reggae genre to Jamaica and across the globe.  With time progressing, their influences lead to the rise of prominent artists like Bennie man, Buju Banton, Shaba Ranks, Chaka Demus and Piers.

The influx of dancehall music never spared the nation of Malawi. In the early 1990’s, the nation was forced to embrace dancehall music masking itself in the sub-genre of Ragamuffin. Amid strong  resistances and oppositions from all circles of the nation-radio stations, parents and music studios-   for being foreign and strange, one man named Anne Matumbi single handedly carried up the load upon himself and rescinded the wrong perception  people had towards the new genre. His powerful lyrics, skill, talent and beats were too good not to nod heads and dance along.

Anne Matumbi, real name Chiyanjano Muheziwa came in the lime light with his hit single “Greetings Malawi.”  Influenced by King Yellow man himself, Matumbi shook the airwaves to the amazement of his peers. He started singing at the same time with the then Malawian dancehall veterans like San B, DR Lizard, Tuck T, Baggle Tanks and TG Smooth. Yet he stood out with exceptional charisma in both words and beat delivery. With his versatile music composition, flexibility on stage and air wave conquering, it was a matter of time to be called King of the dancehall. It was undisputed and nonnegotiable that Malawi embraced and loved dancehall music because they had tasted the delicious piece prepared by Matumbi. `Malawian dancehall music owes it to him; he generated and nurtured it alone to produce the desired fruits. No wonder he prides calling himself the King of dancehall up to date.

The self-acclamation of the title as the king of dancehall has not been fully welcomed with both hands from some quarters. Nonetheless, the dancehall icon’s achievements speak volume of his greatness. He’s the only dancehall artist whose song from the 1990’s- “Greetings Malawi”- is used up to date  on Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Radio1 program “Nthawi ya achinyamata”.  Not only is he musically competent but also amazingly talented bracing comedy into music by bringing fully packaged entertainment one of its kind in the industry. The legendry producer the late Chuma Soko deserves a pat on the back by helping him with top class dancehall beats. Regardless of the controversies  surrounding Anne Matumbi, it is safe to say his old goodies from the early 1990’s and  2000’s nourished the sad faces that lacked good music, created curiosity for upcoming artist to move out of their comfort zones , entertained the starving youth of the time and above all, pioneering the embracement of the genre by the society.

Ragamuffin genre evolved over the years and birthed dancehall music which has been prominent and gained roots in the country. This has mushroomed enormous upcoming talent both real and fake. This gives opportunity to listeners to winnow off mediocre talent.   The late Vic Marley, Mad Character Crew, Mafunyeta and the disbanded Nyasa Gurus have presented dancehall genre well in the millennium. And lots of upcoming dancehall artists are working tirelessly hard to take the genre to the highest level.

The deteriorating in quality of dancehall music in Malawi can be attributed to several factors. Poor production of music and lack of talent are some of the major factors. In the 90’s producers would not compromise talent over money. Today’s music production has shifted from exposing talent to creation of entrepreneurship empires. However, the legendary dancehall king too, is largely to blame to a larger extent for negligence of his duties.

Over a decade and half, the “king” has been reminiscing of the glory he attained long time ago and has allowed it to settle in his brain. He is still living in the past convincing the new generation how he created the genre. In fairness sake, quality production of music and outstanding performance will silence doubters of the king’s ability. Talk is cheap.  It’s very unfortunate to see less effort on production placed in the new songs compared to his old goodies.  The old songs had Chuma Soko’s touch, organized and of quality.

Anne Matumbi remains the best talented dancehall DJ in the land and is a truly multitalented radio and TV presenter.  As a fatherly figure in the dancehall circles, he has to wake up in his slumber, pull up his socks and show the nation is still the man in charge.   Of course, he has already made a name for himself; a thing he doesn’t know comes with responsibility too.   It’s high time he wakes up from his sleep   and resuscitates the genuine dancehall vibes that brought him the title NYAKWAWA otherwise this new generation of talented youngsters are doing extremely well and would snatch his mantle by default. He needs to set the standard above the children’s reach.  Just like king Yellow Man influencing the likes of Shaba Ranks, people should point at artists that have been inspired by Matumbi.   Someone please wake up the sleeping giant to rock us one more time for the old time sake  with  fresh baked dancehall tunes like of the 90’s.

In the song, Third Eye is heard rapping, “The warm heart of Africa, there’s never no war/But then we fight against the odds just to even the score/But in Malawi what’s war, is adding up all these votes/For these fat politicians never knowing the score…

Malawi’s leading reggae band the Black Missionaries say the death of their keyboardist Gift Thugo is a very big blow.

Thugo’s relationship with the band dates back to the year 1998 when he was a member of the Wailing Brothers, the band that recorded Evison Matafale’s first album, Kuimba 1.

He succumbed to pneumonia on Monday in Mulanje district at the age of 33.

Thugo was expected to under-go a medical check-up at Mulanje Mission Hospital on Wednesday.

Thugo who was born on October 30, 1982 hailed from Thyolo District.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our brother and keyboard player, Gift Thugo who passed on at Mulanje Mission Hospital yesterday morning. Gift will always be remembered for his humility and quiet nature; his charm and character. Gift has been a key member of the Black Missionaries, having joined the band from inception after he was brought into the fold from our sister band, the Wailing Brothers, by our mentor Evison Matafale. He began his music career with the Wailing Brothers in 1998. We will miss him dearly,” reads a post on the group’s facebook page.

Bettina Chimwaza and friend arrested for shop lifting alcohol

Malawi Police in the capital Lilongwe on Monday arrested two women, Bettina Chimwaza, former Malawi News Model Of The Year and her accomplice on suspicion of stealing alcohol from  Chipuku stores.

Chimwaza and her friend were using a vehicle registration number NU 641.

According to an eyewitness, the two packed their vehicle outside the shop and went inside as if they wanted to shop but pinched the Tequila bottle from the the store’s shelves  into their bags.

An eyewitness said the two then took this as an opportune time to steal without knowing that the CCTV camera placed in the shop plus security personnel were after them.

As they walked – while shaking the bums erotically – to go to their car an alert security guard pounced on them where all the bottled of Tequila were recovered.

They were detained and then handed to Police.

Chipuku shop manager said the CCTV showed that Bettina Chimwaza and her friend had entered the store, gone directly to the liquor aisle, placed bottles in their bags and walked out without paying.

Confronted by security the women reportedly accepted stealing but pleaded for “privacy.”

Get To Know Viperz: Dancing Group

They put up an act that left fun-seekers mesmerized and begging for more. Giving away their bodies to the rhythms flawlessly, stealing the evening away from the main acts of the day. They call themselves Viperz, an all- girl dancing group comprising of Danish Chimombo (18), Tarbitha Lita (18), Esther Banda (17) and Edna Theka (16). Get to know them as they speak to AUSTIN KAKANDE.

Viperz. Why calling yourself Viperz?

ViperzWell, after performing in one of our first days, a close friend just said ‘you are vipers’. That’s how we became Viperz.

When did you come together as a group?

We have been friends for a long time, but we formed this dancing group in 2014. Mainly after noting the gap in urban dancers.

So, since 2014, where have you been dancing?

Mostly at the Chez Mtemba Night Club. But we have also been in Chilomoni, Ndirande and Limbe Country Club.

You are teenagers, are you still in school?

Yes we are all in school.  Edna and Esther are at Elishama Private Secondary School, Tabitha is at Sochi Hill Secondary School while Danish just finished Textile Designing course at Sochi Technical College. And we all encourage each other to work hard as we are aware that we will not be dancing forever.

And your parents and boyfriends approve of this dancing thing?

Yes they do. We jump into the dancing arena after we have done all our household chores so that parents should not be complaining. To the boyfriends, well, it’s like we politely give them our schedule and so far no one is complaining.

In a country where urban dancing in a new phenomenon, where exactly do you wish to take this dancing thing?

We are looking forward to reach the extent of dancing at bigger national events or even making it across the borders. However, we are aware that the road will be tough, but we are determined to make it.

How much money do you make out of dancing?

So far we have not been making much money because most of the show organisers always complain of the low turn out

And how do you use the small proceeds?

We use the money to meet our needs, and meet where our parent are failing to reach. We came out with this idea just to run away from the trap of selling our bodies to sugar daddies just to meet our needs.

Anything to add?

We are seriously looking for a manager and we are also appealing to events’ organisers to try us. To those who may have technical expertise on this dancing issue are also welcome.

The premier mobile service provider, TNM few weeks ago unveiled a K3 million sponsorship package to Blantyre Sports Club Ladies Golf Section to enable women golfers host quarterly tournaments this year.

BSC Lady Golf Captain Connie Muguvu- Karuku said all is set to kick start this year’s quarterly tournaments.

“This is an inaugural tournament of the series of ladies’ golf tournaments at BSC sponsored by TNM. The tournament has received so much interest from golfers at both BSC and Country Club Limbe and we are excited and proud to host this tournament as ladies because previously ladies had very minimal tournaments,” said Karuku.

Karuku said on the same day, junior girl golfers will be competing in the same tournament but in their own category.

“We want the whole country to know that BSC ladies section is taking ladies and girls golf seriously and TNM have made their mark by supporting us,” she said

She thanked TNM for the sponsorship saying it will go a long way in sharpening talents among lady golfers.

“TNM as a Malawian company is always committed to support all sporting disciplines in the country. We believe with such sponsorship like the one we are unveiling today we will contribute significantly to the development of sports among women and of course keeping them in shape,” said Makata.

The tournament will be played on Medal format and the second tournament will be played in July this year.

Lucius Banda: If People Don’t Split, They Don’t Grow Up

Veteran Musician Lucius Banda has described as progressive the move by the Wailing Brother to revive itself outside Black Missionaries.

Next week, the Wailing Brothers, led by Paul and Takudziwani Chokani, is set to launch its album ‘Unfinished Business’, about 15 years after producing Kuimba 1 under late Evison Matafe, before the reggae maetro disbanded it to form the Black Missionaries.

And while some entertainment stakeholders feel the development is bad news for the Black Missionaries, Lucius Banda is of the centrally opinion saying it’s always a good development when bands split.

Said Lucius Banda to a local radio station: “If people don’t split, they don’t grow. If Zembani Band had Charles Msaku, Billy Kaunda, Mlaka Maliro, Coss Chiwalo could we have seen Billy Kaunda’s Band? Could we have had Maloto Vibration? Could we have had Alikutawuni Sounds? When bands split, its just another band been born. Music is not like marriage where by you have to stick to one person.

“These musicians are growing and to me it’s a very good development. Black Missionaries has to start having children and Black Missionaries has to be proud that it has its first born child, the Wailing Brothers.”

Jessie Kabwila: Leading The Team
Jessie Kabwila: Leading The Treason Team

A social media platform chat by several of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials indicates that the party is planning to force the duly-elected President Arthur Peter Mutharika out of power through unconstitutional means. Malawi Voice, have intercepted a Whatsapp conversation in which MCP MPs youths and supporters are seen planning how best they can execute their plan.

The damning revelations come only days after government unveiled to the nation a plan by opposition parties to force APM out, an assertion that was heavily denied by all the parties including MCP.

The group has prominent MCP names such as Jessie Kabwila, son to Lazarus Chakwera, Nick and his wife Rudo Mkukupa Chakwera, Hon OB Chakhwantha, Ulemu Msungama and MCP organizer in diaspora Gerrard Mzaza Nkhata.

The thread of the conversation – which runs from January this year to date- quotes Nkhata calling on his colleagues to organize an uprising in a style reminiscent of Egypt’s uprising in 2011 when Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

“APM can be taken down by just using the Mubarak Egypt style. We can just go to our residence (Kamuzu Palace) and camp there up until the President faints on his own due to fear. And alternatively a small group can pull out a campaign and camp at City Centre and defy all orders to vacate up until Mutharika resigns. I’m sure people can join in” Mzaza says.

However, Kabwila advises her colleagues to be cautious by not pushing the party into it first but use common people to start the revolution.

“The diaspora movement should kick-start it then the nation will follow but it’s not easy for MCP as a party to start something, I know the consequences but let the masses do the job, they just need a starting point. Then everyone else will be on board, these people are suffering and can react quickly,” reads one statement. In the course of their discussion, it is proposed that they should try and involve youths from Peoples Party and other organizations to rally around their agenda. “We have the youth so does PP. I think it’s a matter of structuring, defining exactly what has to be done, be well-timed not reactive, apologetic or too careful, logical etc. We should have some organised chaos chipping at the elephant from all corners till it falls,” goes the figurative treasonous statement. Below is part of the conversation

27/01/2016, 21:25 – +265 998 58 24 45: What are we doing as MCP to deal with this stupid DPP administration and its president? In the last dpp regime, things were bad but we made Malawians to fight back. This time we seem to be normativising these deadly failures.

29/01/2016, 03:26 – +265 999 54 44 70: Kaya aMalawi kupusaku kunachokera pati eish! The DPP is messing up big time and we all seem Ok

27/01/2016, 21:59 – +44 7963 139218: I presume Diaspora movement should kick start it then the Nation will follow but it’s not easy for MCP as a party to start something, I know the consequences but let the masses do the job, they just need a starting point. Then everyone else will be ok board, these people are suffering and can react so quick.

29/01/2016, 04:18 – +1 (404) 617-9530: APM can be taken down, just using The Mubarrack Egypt style nkupita ku nyumba yathu, Kamuzu Palace osachoka iyayi, atha kukomokera momo ataona kalikiliki panja anthu atalusa ndithu

27/01/2016, 22:02 – +44 7754 944607: Does not opposition have youths who are fearless to tackle the issue head on?

27/01/2016, 22:08 – +265 998 58 24 45: We have youth, pp also has them . I think it 7th a matter of structuring, defining exactly what has to be done, well timed, not reactive, apologetic or too careful, logical etc. Rather, some organised chaos chipping at the elephant from all corners till it falls, all hands on Dec

27/01/2016, 22:09 – +44 7963 139218: We have the youth in opposition but legally any uprising started by opposition result in treason cases, let’s use the people. I believe if Malawians start it, MCP is ready to take care of them, there might be differences but even those starting this know the potential and opportunities that lies ahead.

29/01/2016, 01:48 – +1 (404) 617-9530: Pita ndiofunikatu kukamuchotsaku ku Kamuzu Palace yathu. Nyumba yathu imeneyi ngati anspangira Mubarrack in Egypt

29/01/2016, 06:14 – +44 7969 216335: But if a small group can pull out a campaign kunena Kuti sitichoka ku city centre till atatulapansi udindo I’m sure people can join in.

29/01/2016, 06:17 – +265 999 54 44 70: As MCP we were supposed to take advantage of all this mess and play it from the background

28/01/2016, 22:00 – +265 996 24 30 27: I entirely agree with you , me too wonder why we are not ticking and get necessary backing. Few of us had/have careers elsewhere but opted to join liberation movement. Alas its business as usual. Ask JK and myself. Even in parliament, we don’t get the support we need to get this DPP down
29/01/2016, 06:43 – +265 998 58 24 45: I used to think joining politics would give me a chance to be more active, use my activist voice with those of others but what I have seen is speaking out, walking in the streets has earned me the title waphuma ameneuja, the bulk of those I stand with prefer apologetic so called calculated politics. I’m an activist and do not apologise for my belief in people power. I must say, I’m reaching a point where it seems I belong more to my classroom where my phuma led in defeating bingu, it gets frustrating to be in a party everyone wants and is looked up but it is afraid of its own power, I feel like a person dying of thirst when I’m in a river. Me and my phuma seem to belong elsewhere.

“This season we are geared to amplify our game to another level. We learnt a lot in our previous edition of the contest and pretty much it is from that, that now we are spicing things up even more,” said Kachinjika adding that each week, the highest voter each week would also earn a prize.

In the previous edition of Airtel Trace Music Star competition, over 20, 000 people auditioned via their mobile phones and at the end of it all, Sam Mjura Mkandawire emerged tops and pocketed a cool MK14 million before proceeding to participate in the pan African contest which saw a Tanzanian contestant carrying the day.

This time around, top three local winners will pocket MK10m, MK3m and MK2m respectively. To enter the contest Airtel subscribers should dial 59911 and record a song. They can also practice by singing Karaoke on their phone.

According to Kachinjika, so far the response generated by the just launched second season is overwhelming.

“We are looking forward to having the best contest ever, a show that will be fully packaged with the cream of local talent. I believe the overwhelming response we are registering this time around is as a result of the immense impact of the first season,” she said further highlighting that winning these weekly or monthly prizes does not reflect on performance score of the final.
