He is not known as king for nothing, because whenever the Malawian Hip-Hop megastar Tay Grin works on something fresh, he means business. Having taken a jumbo step to feature Nigeria’s music legend 2Baba (also known as 2Face), and rolling out a mega promotion campaign for his latest track “Chipapapa”, the Nyau King continues to set the trends as he spends a whopping K5.5 million (about US$7,500) on the production of the song’s video.

 The rap celebrity flew to South Africa a week ago to meet 2Baba and proceeded to the shooting of the video in the gold mining town of Nigel in Gauteng Province. Tay Grin and his Nigerian counterpart have been working with South Africa’s innovative production company Pilot Films on the video which has been directed by legendary director Bruce Patterson who has created noteworthy music videos for big South African artists such as Teargas, KO, Donald and Mi Casa, just to name but a few.

While the idea of spending such huge sums of money, especially for a Malawian artist may seem completely bizarre, Tay Grin continues to stress that it is time for Malawi to claim its spot on the African music scene and compete with the best of the best on the continent and overseas.

“Our colleagues have set levels and the music industry has become a serious business not something we should keep doing for fun. Malawi must move with time and follow the trends. Our friends are making major investments and that’s why we have seen the music and showbiz industries boom in all these countries that we now look up to, right here in Africa. Hence we need to do the same and spare no cost. We need to get ourselves emphatically fit to play in this major league with our counterparts, that way we will make all these big moves together,” says the 2014 Best Malawian Hip-Hop/Rap Artist.

“Chipapapa” video features a variety of super models and Soweto’s Finest dancers while styling is by South Africa’s Maestro Holdings. Lilongwe’s deputy mayor Kwame Bandawe also makes a cameo in the video.

“We made sure we got the best team together and to do that it doesn’t come cheap. We had to make sure makeup, styling and production was of world standard yet keeping true to our cultures. This video will showcase globally and people will see the beauty of Malawian culture and Nigeria coming together.

“The video is unique in so many aspects. It brings together class, culture, pride and beauty. It’s a video for both the old and young. I am very proud of the results and soon people will get to enjoy it. ‘Chipapapa’ is Malawian. This video is ours!” states Tay Grin.

 


Africa’s Top Gay Musician Dies From Anal Cancer

Koyo Bala, one of the few openly gay musicians in Africa, and an icon to LGBTs had died. The musician surrendered to a battle with  anal cancer this morning at Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town. He was initially diagnosed with anal cancer in 2012, and had recently confirmed that the disease had returned after treatment induced remission.

In the recent past Bala has staged a brave fight against cancer and had been diagnosed HIV positive. Speaking to the publication, Bala said: “I went for chemotherapy for six weeks and a radiation programme two years ago, but the cancer came back severely.”

Bala, best known as a member of defunct gay trio 3Sum, in 2012 underwent an operation to remove piles. He was, however, following tests told that he didn’t have piles, but cancer.  He was at the time treated with radiation and chemotherapy for six weeks, but his doctors recently referred him to physicians at the Victoria Hospital in Cape Town, where he will have surgery in the coming weeks.

“I was referred to Cape Town to do the operation by doctors in Johannesburg. The doctors told me they were surprised [I had the cancer] because it is something that is more prevalent in women,” he explained. Bala was diagnosed with cancer a few months after he publicly admitted that he was HIV positive, a period in which he also lost his mother to a stroke.

 Speaking for the family longtime friend and housemate Ephraim “Ephymol” Molingoana told Sowetan Live that Bala always kept a positive outlook and remained strong throughout his illness. “We are devastated and in state of disbelief,” he said. The flamboyant 37-year-old was a member of ‘bubblegum pop’ group 3Sum along with Jeff Moyo and Amstel Maboa. Bala had hinted at a comeback to the music scene when he posted a picture in studio captioned “Let’s go back to the beat”.
 
Maboa is now the only remaining member of the group as Bala’s death follows that of Jeff Moyo who was laid to rest in 2010.

musicianCopyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) says the emergence of social media such as facebook, twitter, YouTube and whatsup in the communication world, has negatively affected operations of Malawi’s artistic work in various ways.

COSOMA Licensing Manager, Mutty Munkhondia, made the observation and expressed concern in Mzuzu Thursday after delivering a public lecture at Malawi Institute of Journalism-MIJ (Mzuzu campus) on Copyright Law.

Munkhondia said since internet came into limelight, people started sharing artistic work such as books, songs and videos anyhow; a development which he said is against the Copyright Law of the land.

“What used to be difficult in terms of piracy in the past has now become extremely simple to commit,” observed Munkhondia, observing that currently, almost each and every citizen has become a culprit of this offence.

Commenting on the matter, Chairperson for Musicians Association of Malawi- Northern Region Chapter Dytone Mbewe, who is also one of the musicians in the country, concurred with Munkhondia, saying social media has badly affected the music industry in the country as songs are shared among the people even before they go on the market.

“As musicians, we are losing a lot of money through social media because by the time our songs go on the market, you find that the songs have already been distributed among the people,” said Mbewe.

Giving an example of Kenya, Mbewe said in that country, musicians do not lose money through social media as is the case in Malawi because people access songs through purchase of musical cards as we do with airtime for mobile phones.

“I would love if COSOMA and MAM introduced this in Malawi because the money will be going straight into our (bank) accounts as musicians,” said Mbewe.

However, Munkhondia said the problem that artistic work faces now emanates from inadequacies in the country’s Copyright Law which was enacted in 1989. He observed that a number of things need to be amended in order for the law to suit the current technology.

“Our law lacks in many areas because what it was focusing on then was physical distribution or problems, but now with the coming in of fibre space, our law lacks a lot in such areas,” added Munkhondia.

He then disclosed the Copyright Law went under review recently by considering all internet treaties across the globe in preparation for its submission to Parliament for approval.

Among other things, the Copyright Law prohibits the reproduction, broadcasting, public performance, distribution and translation of somebody`s work without permission.

News reaching Malawi Voice indicate that the family of Grace Chinga and local family have rejected the casket which Prophet Shepherd Bushiri bought for the body of the Malawi’s gospel songbird instead Malawians of goodwill have contributed towards the final respect to be accorded to Chinga.

That is not all. The family has also rejected Bushiri’s offer to decorate Robins Park, where funeral ceremony is expected to take place.

According to one of the coordinators of the event, Wycliff Chimwendo,  one of the funeral parlors in the city of Blantyre has contributed a casket and hearse; Jai Banda gave out his PA system and band equipment to be used at the function; Professor Chisi footed the bills at College of Medicine mortuary; Robin Alufandika offered Robins Park to be used for the funeral ceremony.

On Thursday, Malawians woke up to the shocking news of a sudden death of one of the gifted gospel music singers Grace Chinga, and few hours later a theory has imaged linked the death to her unwilling initiation into the illuminati occult by flamboyant prophet Shepherd Bushiri.

According to Braveheart Media Group, Grace Chinga had a special relationship with Bushiri but later discovered his weaked ways and opted not only to walk out but to tell it all to the outside world.

The group further disclosed that the release of N’dzaulula was a defiant feat after she was fore-warned by Bushiri.

In the song, Chinga promised that she would reveal thing which happens the dark under world. She stated that she would let people know that Bushiri has bloody money which he got in a dirty way.

Chinga labelled Bushiri as a Hyena in a Lamb Skin who she had kept his secrets for a long time and time was rife to let people know who he was.

She also alleged that she would reveal that Bushiri has a lot of kids outside wedlock, it further had a message that Bushiri is a crook who needed to be exposed if he had not repented and asked for God’s forgiveness .

It is believed that Bushiri had to bribe local producers to reject recording the song. However, a militant Grace refused to let it go but went ahead to produce it through her amateur son Steve Spesho.

Soon after the song hit airwaves, Grace suffered two major blood-shortage-related illnesses.

Bushiri’s K44 million was first offered to Grace Chinga’s family who vehemently rejected the offer labeling it ‘blood and dirty’ money.

On Friday morning Prophet Bushiri sent his team to Chinga residence in Chimwankhunda to deliver a K44 million cheque as a condolence package from him.

However, Grace Chinga’s family had reservations as they believe that their daughter’s soul was traded by dark powers after she refused to join Bushiri’s occult.

Upon realizing that his blood money cannot return to the underworld, the Prophet asked his team to fund something that is both urgent and national in nature. That is when he talked to his close friend Walter Nyamilandu Manda who has for sometime been a member of Illuminati.

The FAM President did not hesitate and flouted the procedures to call for an impromptu media briefing where the Prophet made his donation.

The football association regulations demand that anyone intending to donate anything should first make a formal written request which takes close to two weeks to process.

Within the two weeks, FAM takes the request to Sports Council where information on the donor is gathered. The council cross-checks with Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and Registrar General’s office to verify adherence matters on the part of the donor.
In Bushiri’s case, none of these procedures were followed, everything happened within a day just because the Prophet and Walter share occult affiliations.

Bushiri arrived from South Africa with the usual pomp and an extravagant casket plus money to support at the funeral. But the relatives of the deceased refused to accept anything from the suspected prophet.

The renowned musician died after a very short illness of complaining about headache.

Bushiri is increasingly being feared to be another false prophet with a quest for material glory, power and fame more than spiritual pursuit.

Nurse In-Charge of Maternity Wing at Mwanza district Hospital, Juliana Chatuwa on Thursday said between July and December the district hospital registered 108 pregnancies that were delivered at home, a development she said poses a threat to safe motherhood.

Chatuwa said this during at a review meeting held at Senior Chief Kanduku’s headquarters where members of Community Action Groups (CAG) shared notes with the District Community Mobilization Team (DCMT) on how the two groups are implementing safe motherhood activities in the district.

She also disclosed that out of 1734 teenage pregnancies that were recorded during the same period, 739 delivered safely.

She further revealed that the hospital has registered 140 abortions the majority of which she said occurred to teenagers because they were not mature enough to give birth.

Chatuwa explained that teenage pregnancies are dangerous not only because of health complications but also that they lead to school drop-out which in turn leads to high illiteracy.

She also expressed worry over late start of antenatal clinic saying doing so puts a pregnant woman at risk of experiencing many complications.

Chairperson of Mwanza District Community Mobilization Team, Phillip Banda urged community leaders to continue fighting against beliefs that hinder pregnant women from delivering at a heath facility.

Banda said it is very worrisome that the district is one of those with high fertility rate in the country.

ZBS, NPL Take over Management of Miss Malawi Beauty Pageant

Miss MalawiTwo of the country’s leading media houses, Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) and Nation Publications Limited (NPL) have taken over the organization and management of Miss Malawi Beauty Pageant with immediate effect.

The development raises hope for the possible crowning of Miss Malawi 2016, almost five years since the national beauty contest was last held.

Speaking for Miss Malawi Project, ZBS’s Teleza Temweka Ndanga said the two media giants have been driven with the passion to promote women and girls in the country.

“We are taking over the licence from Events Management Limited. As the country is well aware, Malawi has not had the Miss Malawi beauty contest since 2011 and we felt there was a gap and a need to come in and start organizing these events again,” said Ndanga.

According to her, Events Management Limited is set to officially hand over the licence to ZBS and NPL at an event to be held in Lilongwe on Wednesday, March 23.

“Thereafter, we will start organizing events that will culminate into a national event. We will start with the districts; we will have our judges to go to each and every district in Malawi where they will shortlist those that meet the requirements that will be set to contest at a regional level. And those that will make it at a regional level will contest at a national level,” she said.

The Miss Malawi throne remain empty up to date after the 2011 national queen Susan Ntegha abandoned the crown at the expiry of her tenure in 2012 and is currently pursuing studies in Ireland.

The Malawi Police Service have threatened to arrest those people who are selling a pirated copy of Grace Chinga’s Ndidzaulula album barely few days after her death.

This follows a post by veteran musician Lucius Banda on his facebook page earlier today which reads: “She left this album unreleased. She left three young children. We gathered in huge multitude claiming we loved her. Today someone is selling a pirated copy of the album, and we are buying it. Do we know what we want in life Amalawi?

And speaking at Chinga’s funeral former, former Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) trustee Wellington Chatepa observed that many musicians were suffering and that they were failing to make ends meet because of piracy.

“Musicians are struggling out there, they sweat to produce songs but there is too much piracy out there and so we call upon people to support artists by buying original copies.”

Musicians Association of Malawi (MAM) has said it will launch an investigation into the leakage of late Grace Chinga’s unreleased songs on the local market.

Just less than a week since Grace Chinga was buried, the Malawi music market has been flooded with the complete compilation of her new album, when reports are indicating that the fallen gospel music star only released three songs.

Mam President Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango has since vowed to deal with whoever is responsible for the leakage.

“We have been discussing how best we can coordinate with the Copyright Society of Malawi to see how we can stop this. We are trying to see whether we can manage to get those who are duplicating this music. Otherwise, we want to seriously condemn this act. It is uncalled for and we plead with those that are perpetrating to immediately stop,” said Mhango.

He added, before engaging Grace Chinga’s producer Khathwa Aligiza, MAM plans to first discuss with the musician’s family, as her son Steve Spesho was also involved in the production of the music.

It is true that death is an irritating and painful sting. And it is true that death is a coward that lurks in the undergrowth of our hopes, it moves stealthily until it strikes when we least expect. Even Grace Chinga, the song bird that has walked her last mile, did not know when death would come for her. In the afternoon of the Wednesday she rode her heavenly chariot, Grace was surely lithe as she has always been. A soul that danced and sang her mission clearly: A mission to liberate mankind from the shackles of fear. Grace even refused to be death’s coveted trophy. To her, death had no power over her because she knew she would only depart once her mission has been accomplished. In Mundisungire Korona, Grace makes it known that no one, not even death would stop her from her mission:

Surely Grace’s mission has been accomplished and the Master has approved her departure. Death cannot claim victory over Grace. Death has only been a messenger to carry home a warrior that fought her fight, a warrior that knew where home is because, even when she was fighting she knew one day she would return home and she made sure home was ready:

In her living years, Grace’s voice soared with a resonance unmatched. Grace was an unorthodox gospel artist who seamlessly weaved social issues into the otherwise tight fabric of gospel music. She refused to play statue and always brought a kind of bounce on stage. But while she danced and jumped, her voice refused to follow the antics of her body for the voice came out smoothly yet powerfully that even those that are hard to convince would, at least, shake their heads.
In a society that is so quick to judge like ours, Grace Chinga’s music would have long been forgotten had she not been blessed with the mettle that characterises her music. Once upon a time Grace made the headlines after one of the most publicised local divorce cases in recorded time. When everybody thought Grace was finished, she, like a proverbial phoenix, rose from the ashes and even soared higher than ever.
Grace’s music was always live and courageous. She refused to be an ordinary gospel artist who only sings about the hereafter, sickness or blessing. She knew she was a citizen of this earth and what happened on earth was her business. She took hypocrisy head on in one of her last songs Nzaulura:

Perhaps Grace did not live long enough to reveal to the world the dirty that is hidden in people’s hearts. But still she managed to tell us that amongst us there are hypocrites and we should be careful.
Grace was not only in the name but in the being. She was nature’s conspiracy to combine pleasurable appearance, wit, talent and courage in one fine body. She was an obedient missionary who never surrendered to the whims of mankind but He who sent her on a mission and she never hid it for she sings in Udzayima Nyimbo:

After getting bothered with self acclaimed men of God for their controversial prophecies of desolation rather than of hope and salvation, Malawi dancehall group outfits have come out to defend President Peter Mutharika for his recent rant against these prophets.

While likening these controversial prophets to magicians and soothsayers, Blackface Family in the song Mwandikumbira Dzenje sample the Malawi leader’s audio bite in which dresses down Nigerian Prophet T.B Joshua whose prophecy about a Southern Africa President dying by April.

The song grabs you tip by tip thinking it is just that audio of Mutharika’s anger over the prophets, but no. It is the artistic prowess in the song that slowly drives a listener into the issue the reggae have placed grounds on.
Blackface family also wonder why prophets are not busy driving more people to the gospel of God but prefer to preach doom.

By the blend of Tumbuka, Chichewa and English the track points Malawi’s South African based Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, trashing his wooing of musicians lately to join his church let alone join the bandwagon of others who keep singing praises for him rather than Jesus the Savior.

The song also does not spare politicians, branding them as greedy and only using the electorate whom they kneel down to during campaign period but later take as mere trash when in power.

In the third verse, the song switches to the whirlwind of Miracle money- a novelty of Bushiri, which dramatically infers to people getting rich in just a blink of an eye, but that’s a miracle anyway.

It may perhaps be in the spirit of the reports making rounds that other musicians are also heading the same way having been enticed by bounty packages and poshy cars by Bushiri.

In the track, Blackface features another Mzuzu based artist, Yuppie. The group’s earlier track, Msika Wapsyanso, which talked of the ills of markets fire in Malawi went to the extent of being banned on the state broadcaster during the Joyce Banda regime something which has made the Mzuzu boys wear the cassock of advisory crew lately.
The group which consists of three young brothers, namely Limbani, Joel and William Phiri and Nick Gondwe, a childhood friend who is currently based in South Africa also digs on Joyce Banda for her role in the cashagte scandal that saw over K553 billion being uncounted for and K24 billion looted by PP and government officials reportedly with her blessings.

BIRMINGHAM  -Some of the biggest names in Malawi music  industry will hit the stage at the 2016 edition of the glamorous and glitzy Malawi Achievers Awards UK to be held on  April 16, 2016 in Birmingham, at the red carpet purpose-built CSN International Exhibition and Conference Centre

The awards is hosted by Malawi Association UK (MAUK) an umbrella body for all Malawian chapter and local association and Malawian groups.

It was established in 2014 to recognise and identify deserving unsung heroes and heroines of Malawian decency and making a difference in their communities and tirelessly and selflessly work hard to inspire others.

MAUK is excited to have the two great musicians from homeland  added as performers to an already packed lineup for this year’s ceremony.

Apart from Piksy, other artists to perform at the event will be Scotland-based Malawian artist Sean Focus, Osei Boi and Great Adams from Ghana, Kazz aka Mr Boomslang of the Amina Kadeya fame.

MAUK will also have a suprise package for the night of a special top artist to perfom who will take the audience unawares of his presence.

This year’s event has a lot of surprises in stock and patrons to the show will have a memorable night adding that there will be surprise international guest artists and entertainers and the fun levellers will be treated to a sumptuous dinner.

People have the opportunity to book a table online and at the same time choose where they want to sit.

The artist has described Bushiri as fake and superstitious.

David Kalilani also claims of that Bushiri sleeps with little girls in his ministry and that is a sign that his ministry is an abomination.

‘Osaopa’ is hitting hard at flamboyant prophet Shepherd Bushiri, describing him as a false prophet, who is sourcing power to perform miracle from Satan.

One of the country’s thriving artists, Chimwemwe Mwenyemasi, who is strong at designing shoes, has gained fresh spotlight with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) designs.

Mwenyemasi, who recently interacted with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the First Lady Getrude Mutharika at a youth innovation hub in Lilongwe, has designed stylish shoes, earrings and handbags bearing DPP colour and symbols.

The first time Mwenyemasi was catapulted into the limelight was when he designed a billionaire boot made from a billionaire wrapper.

Meanwhile, the DPP earrings, shoes and handbags have become a talk of the town especially on the social media.
The artist told Malawi Voice that he wanted orders from the DPP supporters.

“I know that the only way I can survive as an artist is to come up with something unique that people can support me. Hence the designs with the DPP products. I didn’t want to go about knocking on the doors of the party’s officials or supporters for help but to create something that will compel them to support me,” said Mwenyemasi.

Entertainment is perceived to be expensive and it is indeed expensive, but for the past weeks PSI Malawi, has been on a national tour in a bid to promote the consistent use of condoms amongst sexually active young people.

Recently, people in Mangochi and Salima were treated with a free live music show with Lucius Banda and Zembani Band performing live.

Speaking in all the venues, PSI’s Communications Coordinator, Kelvin Shema, said that they were conducting these shows to interact with young people and remind them on the importance of being of good health in order to achieve their goals.

“We decided to conduct this tour as one way of interacting with young people who are sexually active to keep on reminding them that good health is crucial in achieving goals” he said

Shema further said that these shows had been organized to reinforce the use of Chishango amongst sexually active young people, bringing health-entertainment to young people as well as engaging with PSI’s target audience.

One of the spectators in Mangochi Jailos, said the coming of PSI was timely intervention, considering that the district remains to have high HIV prevalence rate and the district’s population continues to skyrocketing.

Malawi’s population is largely young people and it has been highlighted that initiatives targeting young people are core to winning the battle against HIV/AIDS. Recently there have been similar activities targeting young people but so far, PSI’s Music Bash Shows have managed to bring together thousands of young people in a bid to sensitize them on the use of Condoms.

According to Shema, Similar shows are yet to take place in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Kasungu where the Black Missionaries will be performing.

As one way of promoting Poets from the grass root level, veteran poets in the country have teamed up to form the group called Nthukutila ya Ndakatulo Scheduled to be launched on April  17 at the Blantyre Cultural Centre

Speaking in an interview, the group’s chairperson Sylvester Kalizang’oma said Poets create pictures, lines that connect people in many ways as well as splitting magnetic words which attract the senses of poet addicts but they lack motivation.

Kalizang’oma said the development has prompted Nthukulira ya Ndakatulo to venture into an arena of promoting fellow poets financially and with ideas.

Sylvester Kalizang’oma says Malawi has many amazing poets that are gifted but their talents are hidden due to financial hindrances.

“After doing a thorough research of poetry in Malawi, we discovered that there is still a huge gap between the well established and upcoming poets in terms of promotion. You see, without money it is impossible for poets to produce albums on their own and get exposed at the same time. That is why we have formed this group,” he said.

He also added that several poets are working on their albums now and that Nthukutila ya ndakatulo is looking forward to take their projects to the public.

“Nthukutila ya Ndakatulo is proud to inform all poetry fans that there are some budding poets who are in the studio recording their debut albums and we will unveil those products to the public soon.

“We want to tell our fans that we have come with a new touch of poetry, and they should anticipate the unique entertainment from Nthukutila ya Ndakatulo.” He said.

Nthukutila ya Ndakatulo launch is expected to bring together number of artists, including: Amfumu Kenneth Khondiwa, Luckier Chikopa, Samuel Joseph, Hudson Chamasowa, Given Chichitike, Yohane Pangani, Sylvester Kalizang’oma, Atcheya Frank Naligonya, Mr Jokes, The Mighty GYV, Mada Nyambo, Norman Nyirenda, Felix Njonjonjo, and gospel musician Ronald Thamakera.
