By Esnath Kalawe

After brief stay in the Poetry Industry, Poet Hudson Chamasowa popularly known by his stage name ‘Mchochombe’, says he is venturing into music genre with a debut song titled ‘zikutsobole’.

Poet Chamasowa has been hitting diverse airwaves in and outside the country with talented poems that made him on the lime light in 2008.

Poems like Zochitika ku Simongoliya, Abengo and Ndende  yamizimu are some of the poems that boosted his fame in poetry industry.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Wednesday in Lilongwe, Poet Hudson Chamasowa confirmed that he was currently recording his first song that would be out any day next week, saying it would be out via his social media channel to be pronounced soon.

“It is true that Iam in the studio recording my debut song titled zikutsobole, the song that is expected to come out with a bang, more fireworks and that people will like it and will arrive as a national anthem,” he disclosed.

According to Chamasowa, said the song was trying to convey messages of criticism to those people who are jealousy of other people’s success which has been like a predisposition especially these days.

“The idea came in because our society has been with full of jealousy people particularly when they see that their friends are extremely doing well in their life,” he said.

Chamasowa confided that heal ways had a desire to continue from where late Evison Matafale the ‘Watsetseleka’ fame which hit the country in early 2000.

The Poet said he did his four songs in 2014 which were down casted by people saying he was sounding like Grecian Nyambo and that made him to stop.

“I have been composing songs for some musician that I don’t want to mention their names and that motivated me in serious music that lead me to depart from Matafale reggae I initially wanted.

“I have now changed to R n B genre music, however Zikutsobole is a house type of music,” he disclosed.

He revealed to have done the song alone despite that in the course of time he would be collaborating with Nesnes with his second song titled Zimatinyasa, after the release of zikutsobole.

Despite the music development,Chamasowa will be doing poems as before, hence asking his poetry fans to recognize him with his usual stage name Mchochombe while in Music he will be popularly known as Hard Cee saying all this he wants to avoid confusions.

Chamasowa started citing poems in 1998, currently he is working on a poetry album Zumalanje.

Gospel Song With ‘Half Naked’ Woman Artwork Sparks Debate

BY SYLVESTER KUMWENDA, MANA

A new thought-provoking song artwork from gospel artist Ennoh, which portrays a woman almost half naked, has sparked a Facebook debate on the rationality of a gospel song to carry such type of illustration.

This is the artwork of Ennoh’s new song titled Delu delu which was released last Friday.

The song tackles social issues affecting the society from how people tend to take pictures of people in trouble instead of helping them. It also has messages for what he described as ‘the so called political professors’ on Facebook.

The Afro beat song also tackles how people handle social media, especially Facebook and how they would do anything to get Facebook likes to the extent of showing nudity.

Part of the artwork itself shows a woman only dressed in underwear’s and a bra. She is excitedly looking at her phone she is holding with her partially elevated hands which are covering a minimal part of her chest field but the lower abdominal part is left exposed.

In one of his posts with another illustration of a naked woman, Ennoh said via a Facebook post, “How can a gospel artist post that kind of a photo?

“If you have asked that question (then) I’m glad. That means I am provoking a reaction, I am ready for all the insults and jabs. But the truth is the truth; it never changes to suit your preferences.”

Spot on to his words, some Facebook users queried on the choice of the artwork.

One user by the name Gattusoh Noel Sandram commented: “The artwork is not worthy gospel, no matter how you will explain it in your song. Let the Holy Spirit lead you bro. I am not trying to be judgemental, just saying the truth.”

“The artwork is just poor and misleading,” wrote user Emmadiv Mw.

“The part of the lady in a bikini raises a lot of eyebrows. And would you show this artwork in front of your mum or the church or the pastor? By the way, I am not judging you that I am holier or a born again because I am a sinner too. ‘Koma lingaliranipo apa’ (but give this some thought),” the user added.

Ennoh, fondly known as Igwe, however argued in one of the posts that a lot of people feel comfortable if he rebukes nakedness in his songs, but they are not prepared to see what he rebukes on his artwork. He argues people need to be realistic in handling issues.

“I am not here trying to justify myself or trying to sugar-coat sin or my actions, but I am rather pointing out at a deficiency in our thinking.

“As much as we ought to act all spiritual in our talk, there is also the physical (aspect) which, if I do not deal with, defeats and compromise the spiritual, and vice versa,” he posted.

The artist, however, says the song, which will be part of an upcoming album, is not meant for the weak minded people.

“This song is not for the feeble mind, it is not for people who are covered in their veil of ignorance, and it is not for people who are deep rooted in the dogma of their church doctrines. Remember, the truth reels when it sees its deliverer…” said Ennoh, real name Enock Kabuli.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Ennoh said this is not a typical gospel song but spiritual song, a gospel song that is addressing moral decadence. He, as such, defended his choice of the artwork.

“I settled for that artwork to emphasise a point the song is talking about. ‘Ali mbulanda Chi selfie akufuna kutchuka (they are naked trying to get fame)’, that is one of the lines in the song. It would be absurd to put out artwork which exemplifies something to the contrary.

“I wanted to say the truth as it is in the song without sugarcoating it. I wanted to provoke the reaction of people who are so conservative in their thinking,” he said.

The song has been made available for downloads at malawimusic.com and mikozinet.com.

By Blackson Mkupatira, MANA

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje South, Santigo Phiri on Wednesday launched a gospel music competition in his area worth K1 million.

Speaking during the launch, he said the trophy aims at spreading God’s love among the youth who are currently engaged in malpractices because they do not have productive things to do in communities.

“A lot of young people are just staying in their homes without anything to do, so this trophy comes as one of many interventions we are doing to give them something to concentrate on so that at the end of the day they benefit a little something, while spreading the gospel to their peers,” Phiri said.

He advised the participants not to use the competition as a way to engage in sexual behavior.

“I don’t want to hear that someone has been impregnated because of this trophy,” said Phiri

He asked the organizing committee of the trophy to refrain from corruption saying: ‘the best choir should win.’

Representative of Mulanje Pastors Fraternal, Rev. Peter Kasito thanked the parliamentarian for launching the gospel competition, saying it was the first time such an event has taken place in the constituency.

“As religious, we are often sidelined as many people prefer sponsoring football or netball trophies,” he pointed out.

Kasito asked Phiri to establish the competition as an annual event as it is a good development and brings various religious faiths together and helps in spreading the word of God through music.

Chairperson for the Organizing Committee, Emmanuel Chidule said 58 choirs from five zones in the constituency have registered in four categories.

“We have women’s category, youth traditional acapella, youth traditional with instruments and classical category.

Winners from each category will receive a grand prize of K150, 000, those who will come second will receive K70, 000 and third prize is K40, 000 which brings the total to K1, 040, 000,” he explained.

On corruption, Chidule disclosed that the committee has set measures that would ensure only true winners of the competition emerge victorious, citing the change of judges at each of the three stages of the competition as an example.

The trophy has been slated to begin on March 14, 2020 in Likole Zone and is expected to run for not more than four months.

The launch was spiced up by gospel artists such as Allan Chirwa, King James Phiri and Ndirande Anglican Voices among others.

Notable people present were Mulanje Parliamentarians for Mulanje South-East and Mulanje North, Naomi Kilekwa and Lyna Tambala, respectively and Secretary for DPP in the Southern Region, Pharaoh Phiri.

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, who is also MP for Mulanje Central, pledged in absentia, to support the gospel trophy with another K1 million.

By Sylvester Kumwenda, MANA

In a world where people work hard, swim in their sweat to get some money and finally achieve that, Wikise in his brand new song emphasizes on the importance of taking a breather and having a good time worth their hard work.

This is the first release of the artist in the year 2020 after a blockbuster of a year he had in 2019.

The artist, famed Abusa, wastes no time in reminding his fans what he is made of with his signature dance floor attracting tunes.

He has come with the song Zikamayenda, premised around the need for people to be treating themselves with some good times when things are going their way.

“In every day of our lives, people from all walk of lives work very hard in their endeavours in order to provide for themselves and their families. Sometimes things are bad, but sometimes things are good and people make profits.

“The song, as such, is premised around this scenario and talks of the importance for people to, at times when things are good, take out some time and help themselves into a good time and experience life a little,” said Wikise in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana).

Talking about the song, he says it is a reflection of his life. He says he went through some hard times at one point in life and feels the need of having a good time here and there.

However, the artist cautions on the need for people to make sure they use their finances responsibly.

“It is equally or even more essential for people to make sure they do not spend all their money in the name of kuzipepesa (spoiling themselves). Rather, they should keep some of their money and explore different investment opportunities around for future use,” he said.

The song features one verse from talented youthful rapper Malceba.

“This is a local song. However, I wanted to give it an urban touch so that it becomes a fusion of the two.

“This is where I decided to engage Malceba because he is a very good urban artist and raps very well in Chichewa. He was the natural choice,” said the Urban Music Party 2019 artist of the year.

Wikise revealed that some of the projects in the pipeline include a song Sichina featuring Machuluka who has also produced the song, and Isakakuphonyeni produced by Martin Angelz at MC Studios.

Music Director of Myuzik Pusha Entertainment and Media Consultancy, Biggie Lu say the youth need to be taught and nurtured in arts so that the field can be used as a tool to elevate them to greater heights.

To reach out to young people, Myuzik Pusha Entertainment and Media Consultancy Company have organised a show dubbed ‘Ghetto Jam Festival’ to take place on April 11, 2020 at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe.

The aim is to teach the youth how art can be used for the betterment of their lives.

“I believe in art to change the world, therefore, the show is one of the ways to engage the youth in something useful rather than engaging in promiscuity and theft among other ills,” Biggie Lu said.

He called on all small scale businesses to take part in the event since it is a festival that will attract big patronage. He further urged artists to support one another unconditionally and without discrimination.

In a separate interview, one of the organisers, Tiyanjana Malowa said the youth can develop self-esteem to achieve big things while still at a tender age if they are exposed to the right people or peers.

“We keep the youth busy by organising these events, but it is not all about music, we engage the youth in discussions about everything surrounding the youth and adulthood.

“Therefore, apart from providing entertainment, the show also aims to motivate them to chase and accomplish their dreams,” he said.

The show is expected to start from 12:00 to 6 p.m. and will be spiced up by artists like Biggie Lu, Janta, Seven Omore, Don and Tarz among others. Some of the activities lined up for the show are artist stage battle and dances.

Khwiliro – I am back

Khama Khwiliro, one of the famous gospel artists, is set to release his new single on April 4 this year after a six year break.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Thursday, Khwiliro said he is officially back and the release of the single is in preparation for a new album.

Khwiliro, whose first album was released in 2012, said he felt fresh and rebranded and as such his fans should look forward to the new songs.

“I think it is the time to break the silence after releasing my last albumin2014. Music has changed and as an artist it is important to grow with time while maintaining the brand,” he said.

Sekelera, which talks and teaches about love, is one of the singles to be released in April. He said he will be releasing the singles in the beginning of every month until he drops his album.

Interestingly, Khwiliro’s return is under new management called Allkfresh Music Management. He said being under the new management means that all his recordings, bookings, media experiences and music videos will be done at Allkfresh.

He called upon his fans to get prepared and expect fireworks from the new album.

“My message to my fans is that they should expect fireworks. The songs curtail real life experiences and possess an intimate touch to many soul journeys,” he said.

Realizing that musically fans have moved ahead since the release of his previous album, Khwiliro decided to change the approach to song composition.

“One thing my fans have to be aware of is that I am now an Afro soul/Afro artist and my genre has completely changed,” he said.

He, who is eyeing for the international market, said his fans will not only listen to the usual stuff but also reach out to them with music while also preaching.

Khwiliro, took a six year break in his career to reflect on a number of things and during that break he did guitar lessons at Blantyre Music Academy.

Previously, he used to be a vocalist, piano player, song writer and composer hence advancing his knowledge in music so that he can be adding more of acoustic to his music.

“I am also undergoing choreograph classes with Dancers Life Malawi. I noticed that our presentation of the stage work and shooting videos needed an upgrade hence enrolling for this course so that my videos should compete internationally,” he said.

Alfred Magombo, who  follows Khwiliro’s songs, said it has been a while since he listened to the new songs that will be released next month.

Khwiliro   has two   albums to his credit namely Nthawi Yanga Yakwana which was released in 2012 and NdaonaKuwala which features the hit Alinawo Maso and Sakhala Chete which was released in 2014.

Amongst the collaborated songs was Mwano which goes by the lyrics: “Uli ndi zonse zanga, mwano, Mumtima mwanga mwano. Sindipeleka mpataso eeee mwano mwano. Eeeeeemwano, mwano, Eeee mwanoooo.”

Majority of his fans are happy with the decision saying they have been waiting to hear that the two have started working together again.

Despite both of them releasing massive hits separately their fans have always been waiting for collaboration between the two.

In an interview with one of Martse fans, Jaliwe Kumsinda said the situation the two artist were in was worrisome.

But still, Kumsinda said he did not lose hope because he believed that things will get normal again and the two would work together.

He said “l have been expecting to hear that the two are collaborating again. We believe Martse is not in the industry to create enormity with his fellow artist, but rather to bring good music and he has just proven that by reuniting with Kell Kay. That is the kind of spirit we want and that is what we call maturity.”

The artist is believed to have misunderstandings with a couple of artist such as Gwamba, Fredokiss and the producer AK.

However, majority of his fans believe he will re-unite with all the artists he is having misunderstandings with.

Currently the most trending songs of the two artists is Adidas by Martse and Milli by Kell Kay.

There is a lot that needs to be done – poet Madzedze

Malawian poets have reached out to their fans and the rest of the world with several messages on the deadly COVID-19 disease and the need for everyone to be vigilant in taking precaution measures against the disease.

One of the poets Joseph Madzedze who has released a poem titled “Basopundi Corona Virus” said he is shocked to see a disease that has spread so fast across the world and killed a lot of people in a short period of time.

He said the situation shows how deadly the virus is in spreading the disease and as an influencer he thought it wise to take a role in sending out messages on the disease.

“There is a lot that needs to be done in a very short period of time to make sure that everyone has received the message on the COVID-19 otherwise if this hits the country then we might all be in danger,” he said.

In the poem Madzedze clearly outlines how deadly the disease is.

“Yazingwitsa mafuko nthendayi/a sayansi nzeluzatha/azungu azunguzika ndipo yawathetsa mankhalu chonena alibe.

Yadzetsa kusalana kolona/zoti chikondi chili mmanja ife nkumapatsana moni wathabwa lerokulije.”

He further mentions that preventing COVID-19 is everyones responsibility by following all precaution measures as given by health experts.

Ndi nthawinso yomweyi yomwe ungathe kuziziteteza poti kutetezeka maka pomwa madzi otentha pafupipafupi kudya adyo, ginger mandimu ndikusamba mmanja mwakapite kapite ndi sopo.”

He said the disease is preventable hence the need for all to take a step and follow  preventive measures saying if communities become ignorant in following these measures citizens will regret should the disease spread into the country.

He further advised fellow poets not to relent but take their talent as an opportunity to produce awareness messages that will help the country in the fight against COVID-19.

The poem, which Madzedze said took him a few hours to compose, was recorded at Alfred Tambala’s studio.

The four and half minutes’ poem has a Master Tongole “nzeruzatha” song as an effect which is also talking about the same COVID-19.

So far the poem is circulating in all social media platforms including the Sapitwa poetry website and intends to take it to radio stations so that it can reach out to the rest who have no access to social media.

Eunice Sangambe is also another poet currently on lockdown in United Arab Emirates and has released a video with a poem titled “Coronavirus” carrying COVID-19 message with the aim of reaching out to as many fans as possible.

Her video posted on her Facebook and Instagram ends with the message “Please stay at home. People are dying each day, the virus doesn’t spread on its own we spread it across, Coronavirus is real, Stay safe!”
