Lilongwe based up and coming dancehall reggae songbird cum journalist, Grewiz has overwhelmed the country’s music domain with her latest single titled ‘Real Woman’ which is spreading the message of women empowerment.

Grewiz- Real woman hustle

In part of the song, the songstress is encouraging women not to underrate themselves, hence the need for them to strive to be strong and hardworking for them to be financially independent and remain economically empowered.

“Show them you are not weak, you are strong// be real, do some hustle// real woman hustle// awonetse utha kuchengetela banja financially// masiku mkumatha mpaka zaka chosa mantha, you are the real woman,” goes part of the song.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Grewiz, whose real name is Chisomo Chimenya said she contemplated the concept of the song as one way of motivating young women in the country to be financially independent.

“As a musician, I noted that many young women in the country underrate themselves, they always think their duty is to take care of kids and [do] household chores while relying on the husband to provide financial support for the family.

“With this reason, I decided to come up with a song that would motivate young women to understand that despite their level of education, they can help in providing financial support for their families through developing means of generating income such as small businesses,” Grewiz said.

Grewiz ventured into the music industry in 2014 as hip-hop musician while in form two and she released her first single titled ‘Born again’ which carried the gospel message.

With inspiration from one of the international dancehall reggae musicians, Cynthia Morgan and locally Sangie, the songbird switched to dancehall reggae in 2016 and released a love song titled ‘come closer’. In 2017, she released two singles, ‘Thank you mama’ and ‘Bad gul’.

In 2019, the artist also released two music singles, ‘Kufuna ndimafuna’ and ‘Akutengeni’ whose video has been recently premiered on Rainbow Television program ‘Mafewedwe’ which comes every Tuesday at 4 O’clock pm.

The Akutengeni hit maker is confident her new single will raise young women’s and girls’ self-esteem in the country.

“I am sure that many young women and girls will start valuing themselves and will also develop self-confidence after listening to my new single- Real woman,” she said.

One of the Grewiz’s music followers, Gertrude Phiri described her new single as an eye opener amongst women and girls to be self be reliant.

“The song is actually encouraging us ladies not to just depend on men. It also motivates us that we should hustle in order to bring something on the table and help in addressing financial constraints in our families,” Phiri said.

Wikise Drops ‘Iwe Ndi Ine’ Covid-19 Awareness Song

By Sylvester Kumwenda

As Covid-19 rages on, it is evident that all corners of life have been negatively affected.

The disease, which took the world by surprise, has left the whole world at a standstill as no scientifically proven cure is a currently available.

Despite being at a standstill, one thing is certain; together we stand, divided we fall. This is the message at the heart of the new song released on Tuesday by Afro artist Wikise titled ‘iwe ndi ine.’

A the song starts, Wikise takes the listener to a low sombre mood and paints the desolate picture COVID-19 has brought across the four corners of the world.

He sings: “Dziko lonse lafinyika (The whole world has been cornered)/ Mtendere wasowa (there is no peace)/ Each and every day anthu akungofa (Each and every day people are dying)/ each and every day ma case mbwe (numerous cases everyday)”.

This is reality in Malawi as the country has for far recorded 33 cases of the disease and still counting, with already three deaths.

However as the song approaches the chorus, Wikise reveals that all is not lost, there was light at the end of the tunnel, all that needs to be done is join efforts if the battle is to be won.

Koma iwe ndi ine (But you and me)/ uyo ndi awo/mu umodzi muli mphamvu (in unity there is power)/titha kumponyera chibomba Corona (We can throw bombs at Corona) /tisambe m’manja /Let us wash hands/ chimphulikire corona (Let the bomb self-destruct upon Corona) /osaiwala riboshakata

“This is a song that is calling for unity in fighting this disease. This is a disease that requires a holistic approach in fighting it; that is it must be confronted from multiple fronts,” Wikise told   Malawi News Agency (Mana) in an interview Thursday in Lilongwe.

The Artist said as an effort to play a part in the fight against the disease, he decided to come up with the song that raises awareness of the pandemic amongst his fans and the rest of the country.

“As an artist who has many fans whom I can directly engage with, I decided to take part in the fight against the disease by coming up with this song so as to encourage people to follow all health regulations provided by officials.

“This includes washing hands frequently with soap, use of hand sanitizers, observing social distance all these with an aim of minimizing the risks of contracting the virus. If we can all stand together in this, we stand a better chance of winning,” he said.

Of course, “Osawalakonso ka shabalakata” he sings, referring to how prayers should also be used as a tool in fighting the disease.

The audio for the song has been produced by Mkadyman and Dj Langie.  It has been made available for downloads at Malawi-music.com. The artist however said he would like to shoot a music video for the song.

“If anyone can come in to help me to shoot the music video for this song, I would be very thankful. This would also mean the message contained in the track would also reach a wider audience,” Wikise said.

Nya-Uyu on stage

Lilongwe, May 6, Mana: After releasing an educative video clip on the spread of Coronavirus, Felistus Ngwira, popularly known as Nya-uyu on stage, is set to drop a new video clip on gender based violence (GBV) with an aim of encouraging women to take an active role in the fight against GBV.

The new clip which will be released on May 11 has featured Chiyanjano Muheziwa known as Annie Matumbi in the music cycles In the clip, Muhezuwa acts as an abusive husband.

The clip shows how husbands maltreats their wives and how wives should react to the abusive marriage they are living in.

The female comedian highlighted that the new video clip is a wakeup call to all women who are living in abusive marriages.

“They are a lot of women who are suffering in silence, this is so because they have been told that endurance and perseverance is one of the pillars of marriage.

Through the video, spouses will be helped and take necessary steps so that they should all be living happily,” Nya-uyu said.

She further said that few months might have passed after 16 days of activism on gender based violence but that does not guarantee that all is well in many families.

“This is why the clip has included how a lady challenges her husband and tells him to start treating her well without issuing threats and intimidations,” NyaUyu explained.

NyaUyu’s Brand Manager Lumuli Mwakasungula said one of the ways of contributing to Malawi’s entertainment industry is to work on silent voices.

“Being a comedian is not just about making people laugh, but it is bringing change on matters that affect people on a daily basis so that those that have been infringed should have a chance of airing out their views,” he said.

He also commended Nya-uyu’s work saying it is acting as a campaigning tool in different scenarios of which many comedians are failing to do.

“Few weeks back, Nya-uyu dropped an educative clip on Coronavirus of which many entertainers did not manage and now she is about to release another educative clip on gender based violence which will change and save marriages,” he said.

One of Nya-uyu’s fan’s Lennie Luhanga believes that the clip will change lives of women who have been living in abusive marriages as they will have a say on how badly they have been maltreated.

“I feel like the clip has come at the expected time as women are being abused in different ways but they choose to be silent in the name of saving marriages.

The clip will instill a sense of awareness for them to have a say whenever things are not right in their marriages,” Luhanga said.

Nya-uyu started acting at a tender age but she gained public attention in 2017 through her Tumbuka clip “Kutown” which showed the amusement of a village girl upon visiting the city.

From then Nya-uyu has been known as one of the female comedians. She has won several awards including the young achievers award by the National Schools Youth Arts Festival (NASFEST). Many of her clips are found on different platforms on social media.

Mzuzu, May 21, Mana: Malawi Afro Pop artist based in South Africa says he is set to release his Extended Play next month.

In an in interview from Blue Moon Studio in South Africa, Kali- Chie whose real name is Aubrey Kalipinde Chibaya said he was expected to release his EP last month April but everything came to stand still due to the COVID-19 pandemic that led to lockdown in South Africa.

“COVID-19 has disturbed all my plans in as far as this EP is concerned. My expectation was to release this EP in April but because of the lockdown, I was unable to do it,” said Kali-Chie.

He said the theme of his EP is love emanating from his life experience.

“This title came in because I was once a victim of love. I might say that I am a kind of person who faced it. I was once treated badly and that made me feel not loved then the loneliness engulfed me,” he said.

He added that he is aware that a lot of youth out there go through hard times and it is only music with love massage which can comfort them and change their way of doing things.

“I am conversant of how loneliness changes the mood of an individual who was at one time loved.

“Several young people have ended up committing suicide. In view of this, I have thought of sharing with them that one can feel relieved when listening to music of my kind.

“After having a feel of love that is why I composed songs of life related stories and all I consider in my composition is that I should not lose a life of a young person just because of depression,” Kali-Chie added.

Kali-Chie is from Thyolo District. He did his primary school at Chirimba Primary School and Chisoka before being selected to Luchenza Secondary School in 2006.

Lilongwe, May 22, Mana: Local entertainment firm, Nyasa Media Network, has recently launched a mobile application for their website aimed to increase access of artistic work in the media industry.

We want to expose artists – Tendai

In an interview with the Malawi News Agency (MANA), Manager and founder of Nyasa Media Network, Tendai ‘Tenflap’ Mituka who is also a recording music artist said the mobile app has the capacity to distribute local songs in different international platforms automatically.

“In my experience as an artist, I observed a gap between artists and promoters. This pushed me to develop a website where art can be displayed and appreciated by stakeholders including radio personalities, event organisers and digital marketers,” Mituka said.

According to Mituka, the networking is not only done online as his firm has embarked on physical meetings with the stakeholders in their initiative to expose upcoming artists through coverage on television, radio and newspapers.

Further to that, owing to the Covid-19 global pandemic, Nyasa Media Network periodically hosts online live shows to maintain exposure of local artists.

“Before the Covid crisis we used to organise live shows. With the situation, these days we engage artists to perform on stage at an exclusive venue then we broadcast it live on our website and Facebook page using IP Cameras,” he said.

With an eye on boosting international audience, Mituka revealed that they have started setting up an online radio and TV station on their website.

He said: “Much of the project is already done hopefully by July people will be able to access radio and TV on our free mobile application which can be used by everyone. We would like to enhance integration of the media and art all in one place.”

The mobile application can be downloaded for free on http://nyasatimesnetwork.com. Currently, it is being managed by Mituka alongside two marketing agents and three local artists.

Mzuzu, May 26, Mana: A well-known poet, Robert Chiwamba said he will collaborate with two new faces in his new album to be released in 2021.

People should expect issue based poetry- Chiwamba

Speaking on Monday in Mzuzu, he said people should expect new style whereby two fellow poets would be featured in his new album and was on the verge of identifying who would be better poets on the land to feature him.

“People should expect issue based poetry. New and old styles. All for their choice. For the first time I may feature one or two new poets. I would assure them that my new album will be out early next year,” Chiwamba said.

He added that he is still looking for talented persons who would suit his style, but it is not by default and cited that they would still use their own style.

“Not yet decided on the title. I have many unrecorded work yet. But by December I should be able to have a clear picture on the title.

‘’I am still searching for the title of my new album as I still have some work to do. I do not want to rush into making a title while there is still something I could work on.

“On the poets that would feature me I would prefer if they use their own style to make it more exciting,” the Poet said.

Chiwamba said he releases album every three years and his last album was released in 2018.

“The last poem I released was probably a month ago but as for the album was in 2018. I release albums once every three years. My new album will coincide with my 10 years anniversary,” he disclosed.

The Artist said the Covid-19 has affected his performances saying that he suspended all planned activities.

“Most of my performances have been cancelled. Further, the whole world is pre-occupied with this disease such that art has been ignored,” he said.

When asked why he did not release any poem about the pandemic, Chiwamba said a lot has been done by his fellow artists.

“I feel like many artists have done well on the pandemic such that my art would be repeating. Instead I have used my social media platforms to spread the message,” he said.

Chiwamba said he appreciates the love and support his supporters give him and they should expect more interesting things.

Brutally Skilled Quality United At Dance (BSQUAD)was founded in 2015 with three youngsters before two more members joined their crew.

They started as church dance group from different denominations and were recognized as Chosen Generation.

Due to certain issues that had ascended with their leadership, they quit the name and started their own dance crew with five members known as BSQUAD.

With strong passion for dance BSQUAD recruited more dancers, and this time around they have recruited youths as dancers from Mtandire and Kawale locations in Lilongwe.

The crew is still adding their dance skills in Afro, Break dance, Trap, Modern dance,B Boy, Dub step,Hip-hop, Pop n lock, ballet and contemporary dances among others.

BSQUAD Crew Founder, Ben Mambo told Malawi News Agency(Mana) Wednesday that after realizing that these days a lot of youth are involved in drugs, alcohol and substance abuse they thought of bringing the dancing initiative so that kids could grasp and realize their talents that would help to mould their future.

“A lot of youngsters are falling in alcohol and drug substance abuse, so we want to minimize the tendency of getting attracted to those circumstances, by bringing the kids as dance group preparing them as career that will earn them something in future,”he said.

According to Mambo, Malawians should respect dance as something that could boom them, take out troubles and sustaining their economic standards like other people are doing in other countries saying they earn something out of their talents.

“People in other countries have been financially supported through dancing, we have pioneered this initiative as we cannot watch talents fading, we are not going to stay young forever, we are growing and the skills will help the youths to make money in future,”he said.

One of the trainees, Inos Manyenje appreciates the inventiveness saying the skill would help them to boost their talent that God vested in them.

“Dancing is not very easy in Malawi because people think you can not earn anything out of their talent.

In 2 to 3 years to come we are very optimistic to make a name for ourselves as people will be engaging us in performing during music videos, wedding and diverse shows,” he narrates.

The group is inspired by Michael Jackson as their high profile model, and wants to make BSQUAD well known to Malawians as well as building their own legacy in the country.

Before the inauguration of their new name as BSQUAD, the group won golden medals in regional and national finals at BYB talent show competition.

Last year the group performed at Tumaini festival at Dzaleka refugee camp after being invited by an American Dancer where they performed Ballet.
